What's in this tableWading boots and wet wading shoes we track on Amazon US.
What the table covers
The data behind the table above covers 58 wading boots and wet wading shoes on Amazon US at our last check (October 2026). Most of them are conventional lace-up wading boots. A handful are wet wading shoes made to be worn without waders, and one is a hip boot that landed in the category. You will see more than a dozen brands, and a few of them, Simms, Korkers and frogg toggs, appear many times because they sell several models.
The boots are only half of the wading kit. If you are choosing stockingfoot waders first, our stockingfoot waders page covers that side, and the waders hub explains why the foot style matters. If you are buying a bootfoot pair, you do not need this page at all, and that is perfectly fine.
Pick the sole first
The sole is the most important line in the spec table, and it decides how the boot behaves on a slick riverbed. In our data, 20 boots have a rubber sole, 14 have felt, 11 are sold with a choice of felt or rubber, and 6 use an interchangeable sole system. For 7 the sole is not confirmed, and you will see a dash. Here is what each one means.
- Rubber is the default. Plain rubber grips dry rock and gravel well, wears slowly, and is usually allowed anywhere. It grips wet, algae-covered rock less well than felt does. Many anglers add studs for that reason.
- Felt is the traditional river sole and the reason a lot of people stay loyal to it. It bites on slimy stones. It also soaks up water, takes a while to dry and wears out faster. Rules about felt differ by state and by water, so read felt sole wading boots before you buy, and check your state's fishing regulations.
- Felt or rubber option means the same boot is sold in both versions, or the listing offers a swap. Read the variant you are about to buy, because the Amazon page often shows several.
- Interchangeable means the boot has a system that lets you change soles. In our data this is mostly Korkers, who sell a boot with swappable soles.
Which sole is right depends on the stream. Gravel and cobble rivers are comfortable in plain rubber. Slick bedrock and algae-heavy stones are where felt or studs earn their keep. If you fish a mix, an interchangeable sole or a boot that accepts studs is the flexible answer. I'd choose the sole for the worst footing you expect, not the average, the same logic as choosing waders for the deepest water.
For a longer comparison with the trade-offs on each side, see felt vs rubber wading boots.
Studs
Metal studs go into a rubber or felt sole and give extra bite on slick stone. In the data, 20 boots are listed as stud-compatible (they accept studs you buy separately), 6 are sold with a studded option, and 1 comes pre-studded. For 31 boots we have no stud information, shown as a dash.
Studs have trade-offs the spec table cannot show. They are noisy and slippery on smooth hard surfaces, they can scratch boat floors, and some drift boats, guides and launch ramps ask you to leave them at home. If you fish from a boat, ask first. Studs also wear down and fall out over time, so budget for replacements. The ones sold as a separate accessory are not part of this table.
Lacing: laces, speed laces, BOA and others
The Closure column tells you how the boot tightens.
- Laces are classic, cheap to fix and easy to adjust in the field. 18 boots in our data use plain laces.
- Speed laces run through a series of hooks or guides so you can pull the boot snug in a couple of motions. 16 boots use them.
- BOA is a dial that tightens a steel cable. 3 boots in the data list it. A dial is quick with cold or wet hands, but if it breaks, you need the maker's replacement kit, not a shoelace from the drawer.
- Other covers buckles, bungee closures and slip-on designs, 6 in total.
For 15 boots the closure is not confirmed. My rule of thumb: if you wear thick gloves or fish cold water, pay attention to the closure. If you fish warm water in summer, almost any lacing works.
Weight and the numbers on the page
Weight is shown for 17 boots, all taken from a maker's page. Weights in the data are mostly given per pair, with one maker listing a per-boot figure, so compare carefully and read the note under the model name. The rest of the boots show a dash. We do not use Amazon shipping weights, because they include the box.
Weight matters on hikes in, long days and travel. A lighter boot dries faster and packs smaller. It can also mean a thinner midsole and less ankle support. If weight is your main filter, our lightweight wading boots page lists the boots with a published maker weight, lightest first.
Fit, sizing and stockingfoot waders
Most wading boots are sized in men's US sizes. Women's models are listed in women's sizes, and some boots are unisex. In our data the size range across the boots runs from 4 to 16, and a few boots list only one end of the range. The gender column shows 28 men's boots, 10 women's, 6 unisex, and 14 where the maker or listing does not say.
The real fit question is the wader foot. A stockingfoot wader has a neoprene bootie, sometimes with a sock over it, and your boot has to fit over all of it. Makers describe their own sizing, and some tell you to go up. Gary bought his boots in his exact street size, tried to pull them over a thick wader foot and a wool sock at the car, and spent the rest of the walk to the river learning the meaning of the word "snug." (Gary has since learned to try boots on with the waders.)
Buyer feedback on fit varies from model to model, so we don't have enough consistent data to generalise. For each boot, check the manufacturer's size chart, and where we found one the model's name in the table leads to it. Our wader size chart guide covers the waders side, and the same habit applies: measure, read the chart, then buy.
Do not forget gravel guards. These are the stretchy cuffs that sit over the boot to keep grit out. Some stockingfoot waders include them, and the stockingfoot waders page notes which. Others you buy separately. Any boot that is easy to clean of sand and small stones will thank you.
Women's and wet wading options
Boots cut for women are covered on the wading boots for women page. They differ in last and in size range, and you can find them from several makers in our table.
If you plan to wade without waders in warm water, a wet wading shoe is a lighter, lower, more flexible option. See wet wading shoes for the models we track, and the wet wading guide for how to dress for it. Four wet wading shoes are in our data at our last check (October 2026).
How to read the table
The table above uses the maker's page first and the Amazon listing second. Each value carries a small mark:
- Maker means the value comes from the manufacturer's own product page.
- Claimed marks a manufacturer's claim that no independent lab or standard backs up. Wading boots rarely have those, but you may see it.
- Listing means the value comes from the Amazon listing only. Treat it as the seller's statement.
- — means we could not confirm it. We do not guess.
The columns are Model, Sole, Closure, Style, Fit, Weight and Warranty. Style tells you whether the product is a wading boot, a wet wading shoe or a hip boot. Fit is the gender cut. Warranty is the maker's wording, which for boots in our data runs from 60 days to a lifetime guarantee; for 25 boots, a warranty is shown, and for the others it is a dash. A short warranty is not always bad, but a boot that gets abused on abrasive rock will test it, so I'd treat the warranty as part of the price.
Under each model name, a "More specs" toggle shows what else we know, such as upper material, drainage and size range. You can filter the table by brand and by up to three spec selects, and sort by any column.
Common mistakes
- Buying for the shoe size alone. Over a wader foot, the size is usually different. See the sizing section above.
- Choosing felt without checking the rules. Some places restrict it. Check your state's fishing regulations before you commit, and do not assume a rule that applies to a neighbouring state applies where you fish.
- Forgetting the boat. Studs and some boat floors do not mix.
- Skipping the dry-out. Boots that stay wet in a bag smell, wear out and can carry sand and debris from one stream to the next. Rinse, clean the soles and let them dry.
- Ignoring the Marketing Copy. "All-terrain grip" appears on a lot of listings. Which terrain? A sole type and a closure type are specs. "Grip" is a mood.
Care and safety
Wading boots do more for your safety than most people credit. A boot that grips poorly turns a routine crossing into a fall, and a fall in current can be serious. Wear a wading belt with waders, use a wading staff in current, and take short steps. A new sole on an old boot is a cheaper repair than a spill.
After each trip, knock out the grit, rinse the boots, clean the soles and dry them fully before you pack them. If you fish different waters in a single day or trip, clean and dry between them where you can. Replace laces and studs before they fail, not after.
Brands in the table
The table includes boots from Simms, Korkers, frogg toggs, Orvis, Redington, Caddis, Paramount, Kylebooker, Bassdash, 8 Fans, Chota and Hodgman, plus a few smaller names. Each brand page lists what that maker sells on Amazon US and how its lines differ. If you want the short route, our best wading boots list applies one transparent rule: sole type, closure and warranty must all be published by the maker.
Boots are one piece of a kit. For the rest, see wader socks, wading belts and wading jackets. Fish don't read spec sheets, but a boot that does not fit will keep you from reaching them.

Questions people ask
What are wading boots?
Wading boots are rugged, quick-draining boots made to be worn in rivers and lakes. Most fly anglers wear them over the neoprene feet of stockingfoot waders. The sole is the main event: felt, rubber or an interchangeable system, sometimes with metal studs added. Wet wading shoes are a lighter cousin worn without waders.
How do wading boots work?
Water gets into the boot, so the boot is built to let it back out. Many models list drainage ports or a mesh upper for this. The sole grips wet rock and gravel, the upper supports the ankle, and the laces or dial pull the boot snug over the wader foot so it does not slide around.
How should wading boots fit?
Most makers publish a size chart, and the common advice is to try boots on with the wader foot and socks you will actually wear, because neoprene feet add bulk. The manufacturer's size chart is the right place to start, and our data links it where we found one. Buyer feedback on fit is mixed and varies by model, so use the chart for your specific boot, not for boots in general.
What size wading boots do I need?
Start from your normal shoe size, then check the maker's chart for the exact model. Many boots come in whole sizes only, and the stockingfoot neoprene sock takes up room, so a pair that fits like a street shoe may feel tight over waders. Size ranges in our data run from about size 4 to size 16 depending on the model and the maker. We do not copy size charts here; follow the link on the maker's page.
Can you wear wading boots without waders?
Yes. Wading boots work for wet wading in warm water, when you wear shorts or quick-dry pants instead of waders. Lighter wet wading shoes exist for that job and are covered on our wet wading shoes page. In cold water, boots without waders will not keep your legs warm, so match the clothing to the water temperature.
Do you need wading boots?
You need them with stockingfoot waders, because the neoprene sock is not made to be walked on. You do not need them with bootfoot waders, which have the boot built in. If you wade in just shorts and shoes, a pair of old sneakers can do, though purpose-built shoes drain better and grip better.
How do I choose wading boots?
Pick the sole by where you fish and what your state allows, then confirm the size on the maker's chart, then choose the lacing you will tolerate on a cold morning. Weight, studs and warranty come after that. If you are unsure about the sole, the felt versus rubber guide covers the trade-offs.
