Who Orvis is
Orvis is one of the oldest names in American fishing. According to Wikipedia, Charles F. Orvis opened a tackle shop in Manchester, Vermont, in 1856, and the company has been owned by the Perkins family since 1965. Wikipedia also says Orvis moved its corporate headquarters to Manchester from Sunderland, Vermont, in 2024. Orvis's own homepage frames its customer-satisfaction promise as running "since 1856", which agrees on the date.
Today Orvis sells fly fishing gear, hunting and sporting goods, and clothing, among other things. Our page only covers the fly fishing and wading side that shows up on Amazon US. For most Orvis gear the maker sells directly on orvis.com, so what you see on Amazon is only part of the range. There are, for example, no Orvis Helios or Recon standalone rods in our Amazon data. If you want those, you will be on the maker's site or a dealer's.
What Orvis sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 32 Orvis products on Amazon US. The mix is eight rod outfits, four reels, five waders, three wading boots, one wading jacket, three wader socks, one fly line, and seven packs and vests. There are no standalone fly rods in the table, so if you are looking for a rod alone this page is not where to find it.
Under each value in the table you'll see a small mark. Maker means Orvis states it on its own page. Claimed is a maker claim with no lab or standard named, such as a waterproof rating. Listing means the Amazon listing says so and the maker doesn't confirm it. A dash means we could not confirm it. Many of the Clearwater outfit pieces and blank materials say "listing" because Amazon's text is the only source we found.
The Clearwater outfits
The Clearwater is the core of the Amazon range. The outfits in our data are 9-foot 5-weight, 6-weight and 8-weight, and an 8-foot-6 5-weight, all in four pieces, with full black nickel aluminum reel seats and a hard tube. They include line and backing, and carry the 25-Year Guarantee. Orvis's repair page puts the Clearwater among the rods covered for 25 years when bought from Orvis or an authorized dealer.
Where does that leave the weight choice? The 5-weight at 9 feet is the usual all-round trout rod. The 8-foot-6 5-weight is slightly shorter, which helps on tight, brushy streams. The 6-weight suits larger rivers and bigger flies, and the 8-weight is for bass, pike and heavier flies. Our 5-weight fly rods and 8-weight pages show other brands for comparison.
The data does not list a rod action for the Clearwater outfits, so I won't tell you how the rod feels. A guarantee is not a measure of how a rod casts. If action matters to you, read fly rod action first.
The Encounter outfits
The Encounter outfits on Amazon are a 9-foot 8-weight, a 9-foot 6-weight, an 8-foot-6 5-weight and the 8-foot Encounter Mighty-Mite 5-weight. Every Encounter outfit lists the Encounter reel (size II or IV), a large arbor, line, backing and leader. The line is named as Scientific Anglers weight-forward floating. The maker states a 5-year rod warranty on three of them. The Mighty-Mite's listing does not show a warranty in our data, and its rod action ("medium fast") and arbor ("large") are listing values. The Mighty-Mite has an EVA handle (a foam grip) and a fighting butt in our data.
The maker names target fish for two of them: trout and light bass for the 8-foot-6 5-weight and larger trout for the 9-foot 6-weight. For a first outfit that comes complete and carries a specific line, that is useful. Our starter kits page applies a transparent rule across all brands.
The reels
Orvis sells four reels on Amazon US in our data. The Clearwater Reel II covers 3 to 5, the III covers 5 to 7 and the IV covers 7 to 9. All three are cast, large-arbor reels with a sealed carbon disc drag and a convertible retrieve (you can switch the winding hand), and the maker says they are unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship. A sealed drag keeps grit and water out of the clutch plates. The C.F.O. IV is a click-and-pawl reel, with an aluminum frame per the Amazon listing. A click-and-pawl reel uses a simple internal brake and is the traditional choice for light trout lines; read about click-and-pawl fly reels.
For sizing, match the reel's line-weight range to your rod. Our fly reel size guide explains how backing capacity changes with size.
Waders, jacket and socks
The Orvis wader range on Amazon in our data is five pairs: the Men's PRO Waders, the Men's Clearwater Waders, the Men's Clearwater Zip Waders, the Women's Clearwater Waders and the Kids' Clearwater Waders. The Clearwater men's, women's and kids' waders are listed as convertible chest-to-waist, with a polyurethane membrane, four layers, a 30,000 mm waterproof rating, an 8,000 g breathability rating and gravel guards. Those figures are the manufacturer's ratings, and nobody here has tested them. The PRO is also a convertible chest-and-waist pair with a polyurethane membrane, and it comes in Short, Regular, Long and Extra Long fits. The Zip waders are listed as stockingfoot, breathable.
"Convertible" here means you can fold the bib down to the waist, which is handy when the water warms up. If you are not sure what stockingfoot means, read bootfoot vs stockingfoot.
Every wader is a bet against The Seam, the one stitched line that has been planning its leak since the factory. The 60-day return window and the repair program, described below, are the best protection you have.
The Men's Clearwater Wading Jacket is listed with a polyurethane membrane, three layers, a 20,000 mm waterproof rating and 15,000 g breathability, a fixed adjustable hood, integrated neoprene cuffs and four pockets. Again, those are the maker's ratings. The three sock options (a 3 mm neoprene guard sock, a 0.5 mm neoprene sock and a midweight wool-blend sock) are covered on our wader socks page.
Boots
The Clearwater wading boots come as a men's felt sole, a men's rubber sole and a women's boot with a felt or rubber option. All three are listed with a synthetic leather upper and are stud compatible. Men's sizes run 7 to 15 and women's 6 to 11, whole sizes only. If you are not sure which sole to pick, read felt vs rubber wading boots before you buy a felt pair. I'd check the rules for the water you fish before you pack felt. The wading boots section shows what else is on the market.
Packs
The seven pack and vest products are the Clearwater Mesh Vest (recycled ripstop polyester, eight pockets, a net slot), the 18-liter Guide Sling Pack at 28.2 oz, the 11-liter Sling Pack at 17.6 oz, the 5-liter Mini Sling Pack at 10.6 oz, the 4-liter Chest Pack at 14.1 oz, the 3-liter Chest/Hip Pack at 10.6 oz and the 9-liter Guide Hip Pack at 24.7 oz. The slings, chest and hip packs are listed in recycled CORDURA with a TPU coating. If you aren't sure which style fits how you fish, see fly fishing pack vs vest and how to wear a sling pack.
Warranty
Orvis uses the word "guarantee" for rods and "warranty" for waders, and the terms differ.
Rods. Orvis says its 25-Year Guarantee covers Helios, Helios 3, Recon, Superfine, Clearwater and Mission rods bought from Orvis or an authorized dealer. The company repairs or replaces the rod, and if it can't fix it, it provides a newer model of equal or greater value, at its discretion, for a nominal handling fee. Bamboo rods, original Frequent Flyer rods from before 2014, Streamline rods and pre-2021 Encounter rods are covered only for defects in original workmanship. Encounter rods from 2021 on are repaired for five years. The guarantee is for the original owner, proof of purchase may be required, and lost or stolen rods are not covered. The standard repair fee, per Orvis's page, covers materials, labor and return shipping, while shipping the rod to Orvis is extra.
Reels. The Clearwater reel listings in our data say "unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship". I did not find a stated period for them.
Waders. Within the first 60 days, if you are unhappy or the waders fail for any reason, Orvis says it will replace them or refund your money. After that, waders that fail from manufacturing issues or defects may be repaired, replaced or refunded at Orvis's discretion, and damage from normal use, wear and tear, or accidents is not covered. Orvis also notes that the typical wader lifespan is three to five years, which I take as an honest sentence to plan around.
Which Orvis product for which angler
If you are buying your first complete outfit and want the longest guarantee on the rod, the Clearwater outfits are the candidates. If you want the box to include a named line and a specific reel and you are fine with five years, an Encounter outfit fits. If you already own a rod, the Clearwater reels are simple, sealed, large-arbor designs in three sizes. If you need waders, start by deciding between the Clearwater (convertible, 4-layer) and the PRO (more fit options), and then work out your size from the maker's chart, not from a letter. Our Orvis wader size chart guide explains how to measure.
Whichever you choose, keep the proof of purchase. A twenty-five-year guarantee is only as good as the receipt you can find in year twenty-four.
What this page cannot tell you
We have no tests of any Orvis product, and no rod weights or actions for the Clearwater outfits in our data. I did not read buyer reviews for this page, so there is no fit feedback to add. Orvis also changes its range often, and the Amazon list moves week to week. Treat the table above as a snapshot from October 2026 and check the listing before you click through to buy.
