What's in this tableWaders sized for kids and youth.
Safety comes before the waders
This section is first on purpose. I would rather you read it and skip the shopping than the other way around.
Waders keep a child dry. They do not keep a child afloat, and they can make a fall worse. The Orvis wading guide, written for adult anglers, says a fall in any depth or current can fill waders with water. A child has less strength and less reach to recover from that. Seattle Children's adds that sudden immersion in cold water can lead to drowning within minutes, even for strong swimmers, because of the gasp reflex, and that this is a bigger cause of deaths than hypothermia.
What the water-safety sources I read recommend, and what I'd follow:
- Life jacket on the water. Seattle Children's says a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket should be worn on the water regardless of temperature. One national park's river-safety page requires a Coast Guard-approved lifejacket for children 12 and under on that river at all times. That is one park's rule, and it is not a general law, so check the rules where you will fish.
- An adult within arm's reach. Seattle Children's advises that young children stay within arm's length in and around water, and that children of all ages are closely supervised when wading.
- Shallow, slow water. Pick water that stays shallow close to the bank, with a bottom you can see. The Orvis guide advises avoiding wading above the knees in fast water, and a child's knees are lower than yours.
- No distractions. The adult's job is to watch the child, not to fish. If you want to fish, have a second adult.
- Turn back early. Cold, tired or uncomfortable children have less margin than adults.
These are editorial rules based on the sources linked at the bottom of this page. They are not medical advice, and no pair of waders in the table changes them.
What kids waders are
Kids waders are waders sold for children, in age sizes or small, medium and large sizes. In our data the age labels run from 2T up to 14/15 from one maker, with others covering 3T to 12/13, 4/5 to 12/13 or a Small to Extra Large scale. Orvis and Simms sell Small, Medium and Large kids pairs. The labels differ from brand to brand, and a 6/7 from one maker is not a 6/7 from another.
At our last check (October 2026) the table held 15 pairs. By material, neoprene is the most common, then nylon-PVC, then breathable. The foot is bootfoot on most and stockingfoot on a few. Heights, where confirmed, are chest or convertible chest-to-waist. None is listed as hip. Many are labeled for fishing and hunting, a couple for hunting, and one each for fly fishing and general fishing.
Neoprene, nylon-PVC or breathable for children
Neoprene is the most common kids wader in the data. Listings give thicknesses of 3.5 mm to 4.5 mm, and some are insulated in the boot (the LaCrosse Youth Mallard II 1000G and the 8 Fans kids pair list 1,000 grams). The frogg toggs buying guide describes neoprene as the warm option and notes that conventional neoprene is not breathable. A child who is walking will get hot in it, and a child who is standing in cold, still water will be glad of it.
Nylon-PVC appears in several kids pairs in the data, as listing values. These are waterproof and generally stiff, they do not breathe, and they are often chosen for rough-and-ready use. They are a reasonable choice if the wearer will be in the water briefly and the child outgrows the pair quickly.
Breathable pairs are the minority. Caddis, Compass 360, Orvis and Simms list kids breathable models. The Simms Kid's Tributary Stockingfoot lists a maker weight of 23.1 ounces in our data. The Orvis Kids' Clearwater is listed as a four-layer breathable that converts between chest and waist. These suit walking and a wider range of weather, and they need wading boots over the stockingfoot.
My rule of thumb: for a child who will be standing in shallow, cold water, neoprene is the simple answer. For a child who will be walking, the weight of the wader and the boot matters more than the insulation.
Bootfoot or stockingfoot for kids
Bootfoot is the common choice for children. The boot is attached, so there is one less thing to buy, and no gravel gets inside. The downsides are a fixed boot size, which children outgrow quickly, and a boot that is heavy and hard to adjust.
Stockingfoot pairs end in a neoprene sock, and you buy separate wading boots for them. That gives you control of the sole and the lacing. It also adds a purchase and a step to getting dressed. Check the boot sizes available before you commit to the idea.
Whichever you choose, a boot should not be loose. A boot that slips off at the heel is a tripping risk on slick rocks.
Sizing: buy for now
Sizing for children is harder than for adults, because bodies change fast and age labels are loose. I'd keep to a few rules:
- Measure your child. Height, chest, inseam and shoe size, with the clothes the child will wear in the waders.
- Use the maker's chart. Fit varies between brands and even between models. Orvis and Simms publish kids charts, and our youth wader size chart guide explains the measuring. Our wader size chart guide covers the labels for adults.
- Don't buy to grow into. A wader that is too long in the leg bunches at the knee and trips a child, and a wader that is too wide at the chest lets in more water in a fall. A wader that is too small restricts movement. Buy the size that fits now, and accept that the pair will be outgrown.
- Allow for layers. Cold-water days mean extra clothes inside the waders. Size for the layers.
For the Simms Kid's Tributary, the maker sizes are S, M and L; the Orvis Kids' Clearwater uses Small, Medium and Large. Buyer feedback on kids fit is not summarized here, and the maker's chart is the best guide.
Belts, boots and the rest of the kit
If a child wears chest waders, a wading belt keeps water from filling the waders below the waist after a fall, according to the Orvis guide. Whether a belt in a child's size is available is something to check on the maker's page, as the table does not carry it. Our wading belts page lists adult belts.
A life jacket is not in the table because it is not a wader accessory, but it belongs in the kit. Choose one that fits the child and is Coast Guard-approved, fully fastened, as the safety pages recommend.
How to read the table
Each value carries a small mark.
- Maker means the manufacturer's own page states it.
- Claimed means a maker claim, such as a layer count, with no independent lab named.
- Listing means it comes from the Amazon listing only.
- — means not confirmed. We do not guess.
For kids pairs, many values are listing marks. That is common for these models, so take the grams, thicknesses and layer counts as the seller's statements. The columns are Model, Height, Foot, Material type, Insulation, Fit and Warranty. Under More specs you will find the age or size labels and the weight where the maker publishes one. Warranty is the maker's wording. Simms states a lifetime guarantee for defects in materials and workmanship, and Compass 360 lists one year in our data.
Youth waders for hunting
Several kids pairs are labeled for hunting or for fishing and hunting, including insulated neoprene models. For the construction and insulation questions, our hunting waders page explains boot grams and body insulation. The safety rules on this page apply to children in any water, whatever the activity. Check local rules for anything that depends on age.
Common mistakes
- Treating waders as protection. They are clothing. The life jacket and the adult are the protection.
- Buying too big. See sizing above.
- Cold feet, then cold child. A child who stops talking and starts shivering is telling you to leave.
- Going deep. Children step off ledges. Choose water where the bottom does not drop away.
Care in brief
Kids waders take the same care as adult ones. Rinse them, dry them inside and out, and store them somewhere roomy. Our guides on cleaning waders, storing waders and finding a leak cover the routine, and wader repair covers the fix.

Questions people ask
At what age can a child wear waders?
The smallest size in our data is 2T, from one maker, and the sizing runs up through the early teens. The size label is not a recommendation to go into water. How old a child needs to be depends on the water, the child and the adult, and the safest approach is shallow, slow water with an adult within arm's reach.
Are waders dangerous for kids?
Waders are not dangerous in themselves, but water is. A fall can fill waders with water, and cold water can affect even strong swimmers within minutes. Keep children in shallow, slow water, stay within reach, and use a properly fitted life jacket. Waders are not flotation and should never be treated as a safety device.
Should kids wear a life jacket with waders?
That is what the water-safety sources I read advise. Seattle Children's says a properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jacket should be worn on the water regardless of temperature, and one national park's river-safety page requires lifejackets for children 12 and under on that river. Check the rules where you will be, and wear one anyway.
What size kids waders should I buy?
Use the maker's chart for the exact pair, because age sizes differ by brand. The chart will ask for height, sometimes chest and inseam, and shoe size for bootfoot pairs. Buy the size that fits now. I'd avoid buying a size up to grow into, because long legs and loose bodies trip children and let water in faster. Our youth wader size chart guide covers measuring.
Are neoprene or breathable waders better for kids?
Neoprene is warmer, heavier and does not breathe, so it suits standing in cold, still water. Breathable fabric is lighter and suits walking and warmer water. In our data most kids pairs are neoprene or nylon-PVC, and a handful are breathable. Weight matters more for a child than for an adult, so check the maker's published weight where there is one.
Do kids waders come in hip or waist heights?
None of the kids pairs in our data is listed as hip. The heights we have confirmed are chest and a convertible chest-to-waist design. Higher is not safer, since deeper water is the risk, but a chest wader gives a small child less margin if a wave or a dip in the bottom brings water above the waist.
Are there waders for toddlers and babies?
The smallest age size in our data is 2T, and nothing in the table is sold for infants. For very small children, I'd skip waders and keep them out of moving water. The water-safety guidance says young children should stay within arm's length of an adult around any water.
