Which Gator Waders model, if any
Who Gator Waders is
According to a Realtree business article, Gator Waders was born in the mud holes of East Texas in 2010, started by Justin Waller. The original idea was waders for women, because Waller saw that standard men's waders fit them badly. The brand moved into men's hunting waders in 2014 and added a fishing line, with bibs, apparel and footwear, in 2020. Gator's own site lists insulated waders, uninsulated hunting waders, camp boots, off-road gear and outerwear, and links to warranty registration and wader care pages. Its pages I read don't state a headquarters address, so I won't give one.
One note on ownership. A Q&A site named a company as the owner of the brand, but I could not confirm that from a primary source, so it isn't on this page.
What Gator Waders sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track six Gator Waders products on Amazon US, shown first in the table above. Because six is fewer than eight, the table also lists nine alternatives from Frogg Toggs, Drake, Banded and Avery, labelled as such. Every Gator row is bootfoot. The mix breaks down like this.
- Shield Insulated waders (men's and women's). Breathable chest waders, in Mossy Oak Bottomland, with four layers per the Amazon listing and 1600 g boot insulation. The men's maker page lists shoe sizes 8 to 15.
- Omega Zip waders. A breathable zip wader with 1200 g boots, in Realtree Max 7, listed for fishing and hunting.
- Retro Neoprene Chest waders (men's and women's). 4 mm neoprene with 600 g boots. The men's pair has no use listed; the women's is listed for general fishing. ("Retro" in a wader name appears to mean neoprene, and I'm not complaining. It's a good material for a cold blind.)
- Youth Neoprene waders. A 3.5 mm neoprene bootfoot wader in Mossy Oak Bottomland, listed for fishing and hunting.
Most of the specs in the table for Gator come from the Amazon listing, not from the maker's pages. Only the men's Shield has a maker page in our data, and the table marks values that come from the Amazon page alone as "listing." Where a cell shows a dash, we could not confirm the value.
Breathable or neoprene
Gator sells both, which is the first decision in this table. The Shield and Omega are breathable. The fabric lets moisture vapor escape, so you stay drier on a walk to the blind, and the warmth comes from insulation in the boots and whatever you wear under the wader. The Retro and Youth waders are neoprene, a foam that insulates by itself. Neoprene is warm and flexible, and it is heavy and doesn't breathe, so it can feel clammy once you start walking. My rule of thumb is that active hunters who move should lean breathable, and anyone who sits in cold water for hours can choose neoprene. See breathable versus neoprene, and browse neoprene waders and insulated waders.
Reading the insulation numbers
The 1600, 1200 and 600 figures are grams of insulation in the boots, not in the body. A Shield with 1600 g boots will keep your feet warm in a frozen marsh; the legs and torso depend on the fabric and your layers. If a listing gives no body insulation, don't assume there is any. Our data has no body-insulation statement for the Gator waders, so I can't say how warm the torso is. What you wear underneath matters here; see what to wear under waders.
Gator Waders for women
Because the brand began with women's waders, it is the one question this page should answer well, and I can only partly do it. We track two women's models on Amazon US, the Women's Shield Insulated and the Women's Retro Neoprene Chest. The listings give us the construction, the insulation and the camo pattern, and they give no size range. Women's waders differ from men's in the cut, so a men's size chart shouldn't be used. Use Gator's chart, measure chest, waist, hip and inseam over your layers, and pay attention to torso length, because a wader that is too long or short in the body strains the seams. Our women's waders page lists other makers.
Youth waders
The Youth Neoprene waders are the only youth model we track. Kids grow, and a wader that is several sizes too big will fold at the knee and trip them, so measure and size to the chart instead of buying a size to grow into. Neoprene stretches, so there is some room in the fit. Our kids' waders page lists others, and the youth wader size chart guide explains the measuring.
Children near water need a life jacket and an adult within reach. Waders do not float, and they fill with water in a fall. This is not a place for shortcuts.
Sizing and fit
Gator publishes size charts at gatorwaders.com, and the men's Shield listing in our data gives shoe sizes 8 to 15. I don't copy the chart. Here is how I'd use it.
- Size the boot first. Boots are fixed, so your shoe size decides the foot. If you wear a thick sock, size for the sock.
- Measure the body over your layers. Chest, waist, hip and inseam, with the base layer and fleece you'd wear in cold water.
- Check the cut. Makers use short, regular, tall and stout labels in different ways. Read what each means on the chart.
- Walk through the movements. Step up, squat and kneel. A wader that pulls at the crotch will wear a seam out.
I have not read enough buyer feedback on Gator fit to summarise it, so check the maker's chart and the fit notes on the listing for your pair. Our Gator Waders size chart guide goes through it, and the general wader size chart guide covers other brands.
Gator Waders warranty
Gator's warranty page says coverage lasts 12 to 24 months from the original purchase date, depending on the product, and that each product page states its period. It covers manufacturer's defects in workmanship and materials for the original consumer purchaser, and it can't be transferred. You must register the warranty within 30 days of purchase.
To make a claim you submit the online form with detailed photos of the problem and proof of purchase. Customer service then issues a claim number and a return label. Gator tests the waders, which must be clean, dry and free of debris, or they may come back to you at your expense. If it confirms a defect, you get a replacement of the same product or store credit for the full amount paid. If it finds no defect, the waders are returned. There are no refunds on warranty claims.
The page excludes use outside the product's intended purpose and damage from accidents, sharp rocks, stiff limbs and unexpected falls, which it treats as repairs rather than claims. It doesn't describe a Gator repair service, and it points to GearAid for patch kits and cleaning advice. Our Gator Waders warranty guide takes you through a claim step by step, and wader repair covers fixing a small leak yourself.
Choosing a Gator model
Work through these in order and the table gets short quickly.
- Who is it for? Men's, women's and youth are separate rows, so filter on the fit first.
- Walking or sitting? Walking points to the Shield or Omega, which are breathable. Sitting still in cold water points to the Retro or the Youth neoprene.
- How cold are the boots allowed to get? 1600 g (Shield), 1200 g (Omega) and 600 g (Retro) are the three steps in the range. The youth listing gives no figure.
- Do you want a zip? The Omega is the zip model in our data. A zip lets you vent the chest and makes getting in and out easier, and it is a part that needs rinsing and care.
- What does the warranty say for this model? Gator's page says each product page states its period, 12 to 24 months, so check the product page before you buy. Our table shows the figure where the maker or listing states it.
If none of the six fits, the alternatives below the Gator rows cover the same ground from other makers.
The alternatives in the table
The nine alternatives came from the same rule used elsewhere on this site: the same type (waders), the same use (bootfoot chest waders for hunting and mixed use), and the most specs confirmed by the maker. They are not ranked.
Among them, the Frogg Toggs Amphib neoprene models are the nearest to the Retro and Youth waders. The Drake Hardline, Vanguard and Guardian Elite models, and the Banded Phantom X, are the breathable competition for the Shield. Compare boot grams, the warranty column and the sizes offered. For the brands, see Frogg Toggs, Drake, Banded and Avery.
Wear a belt
A wader is not a flotation device, and water that gets in through the top is heavy. In moving or deep water, wear a snug belt over a chest wader, use a wading staff in current, and turn back if the water is higher or colder than you thought. The hunting waders and duck hunting waders pages list the pairs we track for the marsh.

Questions about Gator Waders
Are there Gator waders for women?
Yes. Gator's brand story, as Realtree tells it, began with waders for women, because the founder saw how poorly standard men's waders fit them. On Amazon US we track the Women's Shield Insulated waders and the Women's Retro Neoprene Chest waders. Use Gator's size chart, because women's waders are cut differently from men's.
Do Gator Waders make youth waders?
We track the Gator Waders Youth Neoprene Waders, a bootfoot wader that Amazon lists at 3.5 mm neoprene in Mossy Oak Bottomland for fishing and hunting. The listing gives no boot insulation, so I can't tell you how warm it is. Kids should wear a life jacket near deep water and be supervised. Our youth wader size guide explains how to measure.
What is the difference between Gator Shield and Retro waders?
In our data the Shield waders are breathable, insulated chest waders with four layers per the Amazon listing and 1600 g boots, in Mossy Oak Bottomland for men and women. The Retro waders are neoprene chest waders at 4 mm with 600 g boots. Breathable suits active hunting and walking, and neoprene suits cold, still water.
Are Gator Waders any good? What do reviews say?
I haven't read enough buyer feedback on Gator Waders to summarise it, so I won't guess. What I can tell you is that the Shield listing says four layers and 1600 g boots, the Retro is 4 mm neoprene with 600 g boots, and the warranty period depends on the product. For a shortlist, compare those numbers with the alternatives in the table.
Where can I find the Gator Waders size chart?
Gator publishes size charts at gatorwaders.com/pages/size-charts, and the Shield listing in our data lists men's shoe sizes 8 to 15. I don't copy the chart. Measure your chest, waist, hip, inseam and shoe size over the layers you will wear, and use Gator's chart for the model. Our Gator size chart guide covers the measuring.
Are Gator Waders good for fishing?
Realtree's account says Gator added a fishing line in 2020 with bibs, apparel and footwear, after men's hunting waders in 2014. Two of the Amazon models are described as for fishing and hunting (the Omega Zip and the Youth Neoprene), and the Women's Retro is listed for general fishing. They are bootfoot waders, which suit still water and slow current. For walking rivers, a stockingfoot wader is more usual.
What is the Gator Waders warranty?
Gator Waders covers manufacturer's defects in materials and workmanship for 12 to 24 months from the original purchase, depending on the product, so check the page for your model. It covers the original purchaser only and is not transferable.
Do I need to register Gator Waders for the warranty?
Yes. Gator's warranty page says registration must be completed within 30 days of purchase to activate the limited warranty.
What does the Gator warranty not cover?
Accidental snags, rips and tears (Gator names sharp rocks, stiff limbs and falls) and use outside the product's intended purpose, which voids the warranty.
How does a Gator warranty claim work?
You submit Gator's claim form with detailed photos and proof of purchase, and the item is tested. If a defect is confirmed, you get the same product or store credit for the amount paid; Gator does not give refunds. Send items clean and dry.
