What's in this tableWaders sold as insulated, sorted by stated boot insulation.
What "insulated" means in this table
A pair is listed here when its maker or its Amazon listing calls it insulated. At our last check (October 2026) that gave 74 pairs, and the table is sorted by stated boot insulation, highest first. Insulation shows up in three forms, and it helps to keep them apart.
- Boot insulation. A figure in grams, such as 800, 1,000, 1,200, 1,400 or 1,600. It describes the boot only.
- Body insulation. A description, such as a sewn-in liner, a removable zip-out liner (120 to 140 grams of quilted insulation in several entries), insulation throughout the body, or a hybrid with insulated legs and a non-insulated upper.
- Neoprene. The material itself is insulation. A 5 mm neoprene wader is warmer than a 3.5 mm one, and neoprene does not breathe. The frogg toggs buying guide puts neoprene at about 3 mm for fishing and 5 mm for colder weather.
The table's Insulation column carries the grams. Open More specs under the model name to see the body description and neoprene thickness where the maker or listing states them.
What the grams do and don't tell you
The Marketing Copy loves a number it never has to defend. "1,600 g" sounds scientific, and it is a fine number, but ask: 1,600 grams of what, in which part of the boot, tested how? Makers use their own materials, and none of the pages in our data names a shared standard behind the figure. So treat grams as a ladder within one brand's line. A 1,600 g boot from a maker is warmer than that maker's 800 g boot. Whether it beats another brand's 1,200 g boot is not something the number can say.
The grams also say nothing about your torso, your hands or your core. If your feet are fine and the rest of you is cold, the boot figure is the wrong thing to chase, and the body insulation line under More specs is the right one.
Weight comes with warmth. The LaCrosse Mallard II 1000G, a neoprene bootfoot pair, lists a maker weight of 140.8 ounces in our data, which is about 8.8 pounds. That is a lot to lift with each step, and it is a good reason to match the warmth to the work.
Neoprene, insulated breathable or uninsulated with layers
There are three sensible ways to be warm in cold water, and each has a trade-off.
Neoprene bootfoot. The classic cold-water choice. In our data, insulated neoprene pairs list thicknesses from 3.5 mm to 5.5 mm, with boot insulation to match. They are warm, durable and quiet, and they run hot when you walk. They suit sitting or standing in cold water for hours. Our neoprene waders page sorts by thickness.
Insulated breathable bootfoot. A breathable shell with a liner and an insulated boot. Several makers pair a three-layer membrane fabric with body insulation and 1,200 or 1,600 g boots, and a few list five layers. They breathe better than neoprene, which gives you more range when you walk. They cost you in weight and in warmth you can't dial down unless the liner is removable. The breathable waders page covers the fabric side, and breathable vs neoprene waders compares the two directly.
Uninsulated waders with layers. The most flexible approach. A breathable pair plus fleece or thermal layers lets you adjust as the day warms up. The Banded Phantom X shows the idea clearly in the data: the uninsulated version lists a comfort rating of 32 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the insulated version lists minus 10 to 50, both maker claims. Our guide on what to wear under waders goes through the layers, and wader socks cover the part of the system that touches your foot.
Uninsulated pairs from the same makers appear in the hunting data as well, and the hunting waders page lists them next to the insulated ones. I include them because the choice between an insulated and an uninsulated version of the same wader is the most common decision on this page.
Sewn-in or removable liner
Where body insulation is a liner, there are two designs in the data. A sewn-in liner is part of the wader: you can't take it out, it stays put when you pull the waders on, and it commits you to the warmth. A removable or zip-out liner, listed at 120 to 140 grams in several entries, gives you two waders in one: with the liner for cold mornings, without it for milder ones. The trade-off is one more piece to dry, store and keep track of. If you fish or hunt across a range of temperatures, I'd lean toward the removable design, and if you only ever go out when it is cold, sewn-in is simpler.

Who should buy which
My rules of thumb, which are editorial and not tested:
- You stand or sit in cold water for hours. Neoprene, or insulated breathable with a 1,200 to 1,600 g boot.
- You walk to your water. Uninsulated breathable with layers, or insulated breathable with a removable liner. Heavy neoprene wears you out.
- Your feet are the cold part. Look at boot grams, then check the boot is a size that leaves room for thick socks. A boot that is too tight cuts circulation and defeats the insulation.
- You are not sure. Uninsulated plus layers is the cheaper mistake, because you can add warmth. You can't take it out of a neoprene wader.
Gary dried his liner on the radiator once, because the foam looked wet and radiators are warm. The liner came out of the experience a different shape. Dry liners flat, in open air, away from direct heat, and follow what the maker says on the page.
How to read the table
Each value carries a small mark.
- Maker means the manufacturer's own page states it.
- Claimed means a maker claim, such as a layer count or a comfort rating, with no independent lab named.
- Listing means the Amazon listing says it, and the maker has not confirmed it.
- — means not confirmed. We do not guess.
The columns are Model, Height, Foot, Material type, Insulation, Fit and Warranty. Height is chest for nearly every pair near the top. Foot is bootfoot throughout the part of the table I reviewed. Warranty is the maker's wording, and in the insulated data it runs from one year to four years, with some makers using replacement terms for the sole and strap. Fit says men's, women's, kids or unisex. A dash means the data is missing, not that the pair lacks the feature.
You can filter by material, foot and fit. If a pair is missing from a filter, check whether its field is a dash.
Sizing: two sizes, plus layers
Most insulated bootfoot pairs ask for a boot size and a body size or fit option such as regular, stout, tall, short or king. Boot sizes in our data run from 5 to 18 across the range, and body sizes from Small to 3XL. Insulation changes the fit: a liner takes up room, and thick socks do too. Size for what you will wear, not for what you wear in the shop.
I don't copy size charts here. Use the maker's chart for your exact model: Drake, Banded, Gator Waders and frogg toggs publish theirs. Our Drake wader size chart guide and the wader size chart guide explain how to measure.
Common mistakes
- Buying the biggest grams by default. A 1,600 g boot is warmer and heavier. If you walk, it can be the wrong boot.
- Forgetting the body. Boot grams do not warm your core.
- Sizing for a thin sock. Cold-weather socks take space, and a tight boot is a cold boot.
- Storing wet. Insulated liners and boots take longer to dry than shells. Our guides on storing waders and cleaning waders cover the routine.
Safety: insulation is comfort, not rescue
Warm waders are not safe waders. The Orvis wading guide says a fall in any depth or current can fill waders with water, and it calls a wading belt, next to a life jacket, the most important piece of gear to wear with waders. Seattle Children's notes that sudden immersion in cold water can cause drowning within minutes, even for strong swimmers, and says a life jacket should be worn on the water regardless of temperature.
My rules, as editorial advice and not medical advice:
- Wear a snug wading belt over chest waders.
- Use a wading staff on uneven bottoms and in current.
- Take short steps, face upstream when turning, and avoid wading above the knees in fast water.
- Wear a life jacket on the water, and keep a dry change of clothes where you can reach it.
- Turn back if you start to shiver or feel uncomfortable.

Questions people ask
What are insulated waders?
They are waders with insulation added for cold conditions. In our data the insulation sits in the boot, in the body, or in both. Neoprene waders are insulated by the material itself, and breathable waders can add a sewn-in or removable liner. A pair is only called insulated in the table when the maker or the listing says so.
What does 1,600 g mean on waders?
It is the amount of insulation in the boot, measured in grams of insulating material. It is a maker figure about the boot only, not about the body of the wader, and there is no shared test behind it, so compare it within one maker's line. Our 1,600 g waders are the top of the range in the table.
Are insulated waders worth it compared with layering?
It depends on how much you move. If you stand or sit in cold water, insulation built into the wader works well and spares you a bulky layer system. If you walk, insulated waders can run hot, and uninsulated breathable waders with layers underneath let you adjust as the day changes. Both approaches work, and the choice is mostly about activity.
Can I wear insulated waders in warm weather?
You can, but they will run warm, and neoprene in particular does not breathe. Pairs with a removable liner give you a middle path, because you can take the liner out. For warm water, an uninsulated breathable pair or even wet wading is the usual answer.
Are there heated waders?
The insulated pairs in our data are passively insulated: they trap your own warmth and have no heating element listed in the specs we hold. If a listing advertises heated waders, check the maker's page for what powers it and how it is rated before you rely on it.
Do insulated waders keep you safe in cold water?
No. Insulation helps you stay comfortable standing in cold water. It does nothing to stop a fall from becoming an emergency, and it adds weight if you end up swimming. Cold water shock can affect even strong swimmers within minutes. Wear a wading belt, take short steps, and wear a life jacket on the water.
Do insulated waders come with boots?
In the pairs I reviewed for this page, yes: every insulated pair near the top of the table is a bootfoot design with the boot attached, and that is where the grams are measured. The boot size is fixed, so check the maker's chart for it separately from the body size.
