Cortland Fly Lines, Backing and Euro Nymph Rods

A Cortland fly line on Amazon US is usually a weight-forward or double-taper floating line from a company that has made lines in Cortland, New York since 1915, and the range runs from the classic 333 and 444 families to specialty lines for streamers, salmon, bass and saltwater. At our last check (October 2026) we track 42 Cortland products on Amazon US: fly lines and backing in the majority, a run of euro nymph rods, and the newer Guide Series outfits, rods and reels. The table marks every value as maker, claimed, listing or a dash.

Which Cortland model, if any

Cortland 444 SL WF8F

Good day on the water for

general freshwater fishing with an 8-weight, 105-foot weight-forward floating line from the 444 SL family, with a front welded loop and a braided nylon multifilament core.

Leave it on the shelf if

your rod is rated 5-weight or lighter, because an 8-weight line is the wrong match for a light rod. The weight is a listing value.

See it on Amazon

Cortland 333 Trout All Purpose WF4F

Good day on the water for

all-round trout fishing with a 4-weight, 90-foot, weight-forward floating line from the 333 family.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a welded loop at the front, since our data lists none for this model. The weight is a listing value.

See it on Amazon

Cortland Finesse Trout II WF5F

Good day on the water for

light-touch trout fishing with a 5-weight, 90-foot floating line, listed for a 2 to 6 range with a front welded loop.

Leave it on the shelf if

you cast heavy flies or fish in wind, where a heavier or more aggressive taper does more work.

See it on Amazon

Cortland Guide Euro Nymph Outfit 10.5 FT / 3 WT

Good day on the water for

euro nymphing, since the listing shows a 10.5-foot, 3-weight, fast, four-piece graphite rod with a large-arbor reel, line, backing and leader and a 2-year limited warranty.

Leave it on the shelf if

you want a conventional rod for dry flies, or a rod with a stated blank weight, since our data has none.

See it on Amazon

Cortland Micron Backing 20 lb / 1000 yd

Good day on the water for

a trout reel that needs backing, since this is 1,000 yards of 20 lb Dacron on one spool (a listing value).

Leave it on the shelf if

you only need 100 yards for one reel, where the 100-yard spool wastes less, or you want thinner gel-spun backing.

See it on Amazon

Cortland Gel Spun Backing 65 lb / 300 yd

Good day on the water for

heavy saltwater or big freshwater fish, where 300 yards of 65 lb gel-spun backing gives long-run insurance on a big reel.

Leave it on the shelf if

you fish a trout reel with a small arbor, where a thinner or lighter backing is easier to fit.

Who Cortland is

Cortland's own history page starts in 1915, when Ray Smith, a clothing merchant and angler in Cortland, New York, began making silk fishing lines upstairs in The Model clothing store, then moved the work into part of the Cortland Wagon Company building. The page says Smith filed a patent and trademark for Victor silk fishing line in 1931 and patented the first braided fishing line in 1932. It says the 333 became the first fly line made with a bonded synthetic surface coating in 1953, and that the 444 series came in 1962, followed by the 444 SL in 1979, the 444 Lazerline in 1993 and the 444 Sylk around 2000.

The page tells a story about the 333 name too: Leon Chandler reportedly joked that it was "our 333rd attempt to get it right." It also credits Chandler, who joined in 1941 and retired in 1992, with helping to establish the fly line grain-weight system in 1960. A group of private investors acquired the company in 2012, and John Wilson became president in 2015, the company's 100th year. The page says Cortland still designs and manufactures fly lines in Cortland, New York.

All of that is the maker's account, and I could not check it against an independent history. Treat the "first" claims as claims.

What Cortland sells on Amazon US now

At our last check (October 2026) we track 42 Cortland products on Amazon US. The mix is mostly fly lines and backing, then euro nymph rods, a set of Guide Series freshwater rods, outfits and reels. There are no packs or waders. Cortland's home page also lists leaders, tippet, braided conventional lines and apparel, but they are outside our scope.

Under each value in the table is a small mark. Maker means Cortland states it on its own page. Claimed is a maker claim with no lab or standard named. Listing means the Amazon listing says so and the maker doesn't confirm it, which is what you'll see next to most single line weights. A dash means not confirmed.

Reading a Cortland line name

Cortland names combine a family, a purpose and a code. Take "444 SL WF8F": 444 SL is the family, WF means weight-forward, 8 is the line weight and F means floating. "DT3F" is double-taper, 3-weight, floating. "WF5S" is weight-forward, 5-weight, sinking. Where the data shows a range, such as 3 to 9 for the 444 SL, I read it as the span of weights the line is made in, while the single weight on the listing is the one being sold. When you buy, only the single weight matters.

Two details matter more than the name. Length varies from 80 feet (the Headwater WF2F) to 105 feet (the 444 SL), so check your reel's capacity before you buy a long line. Core in the data is mostly braided nylon multifilament, with monofilament in the Tropic Plus and Hi-Vis Flip. A welded loop at the front is listed for several lines (the 444 SL, 444 Peach, Finesse Trout II, Big Shot and the Salmon Steelhead lines) and not for others, so you may need to tie in your own connection. Our types of fly line guide and fly line weight chart explain the codes.

The line families

333 and 444. The classic trout families. The 444 SL (105 feet, weight-forward) and 444 Peach (90 feet, double taper) are in the data with the 333 Trout All Purpose (WF4F, 90 feet) and the 333 Double Taper (DT5F, 90 feet). A double taper has the same shape at both ends, so you can turn the line around when one end wears. A weight-forward line puts its weight at the front for easier distance. The 333 Salmon WF9F (90 feet, 8 to 10 range) is the heavy member.

Finesse Trout II and Headwater. Light lines for small water. The Finesse Trout II WF5F (90 feet, 2 to 6 range, front loop) and the Headwater WF2F (80 feet, 1 to 4 range) sit at the delicate end. They suit small streams and lighter rods.

Streamer, Big Shot and Bass. Heavier floating lines for bigger flies. The Streamer comes in WF6F and WF7F (100 feet, 5 to 8 range), the Big Shot WF7F (90 feet, 5 to 9 range, front loop) and the Bass WF5F (100 feet, 5 to 9 range). Bigger flies and wind need a line that loads the rod faster; our how to fly fish a streamer guide shows why.

Salmon Steelhead. Olive and white floating lines in WF7F and WF9F (100 feet, 6 to 10 range, front loop). See fly fishing for steelhead and what weight fly rod for steelhead.

Salt and warm water. The Tropic Plus All Purpose Taper WF9F (100 feet, 6 to 12 range, monofilament core), the Hi-Vis Flip WF8F (100 feet, 5 to 10 range, monofilament core) and the Cold Salt Striped Bass Float WF10F (100 feet, 7 to 10 range). The Tropic Plus and Hi-Vis Flip are listed with a monofilament core. Our data has no temperature ratings, so check the maker's page for the one you plan to buy.

Sinking and specialty. The Full Sinking Type 6 WF5S (90 feet, 6 to 7 ips sink rate, front loop) and the Versatile Euro Nymph .022 DT (90 feet). The sink rate is in inches per second, so a 6 to 7 ips line drops six to seven inches each second.

Running line. A .035" level running line with loops at both ends, floating. It is the thin back section for shooting heads.

Backing

Cortland's backing in the data is Micron, a Dacron backing in 20 lb (100, 250 and 1,000 yard spools) and 30 lb, and Gel Spun backing in 30, 50 and 65 lb on 300 yard spools. Dacron is the traditional, thicker choice. Gel-spun is thinner for the strength, which means more fits on a reel. For a trout reel, 20 lb Dacron is the usual choice, and heavier fish call for stronger, thinner backing. Our backing, how much backing and backing knot pages explain the sizing.

The rods, outfits and reels

Cortland sells euro nymph rods in several lines. The Competition MKII Nymph is 10.5 and 11 feet in 3-weight, four pieces, with a downward-locking reel seat and a fighting butt. The Nymph Series is a 10.5-foot rod in 2, 3 and 4-weight, four pieces, with a cork handle and an anodized aluminum down-locking reel seat. The Guide Series Euro Nymph is a 10.5-foot, 3-weight, fast, four-piece rod with a 2-year warranty. Euro nymphing is a close-contact style with a long, light rod and a thin leader. See what euro nymphing is, the euro nymph rod page and the euro nymphing setup guide.

The Guide Series also has freshwater rods: a 9-foot 7-weight and a 7-foot 3-weight, both fast and four-piece, with aluminum reel seats and a 2-year warranty. The Guide outfits pair those rods (and the euro rod) with a large-arbor reel, line, backing and leader, and carry a 2-year limited warranty. The Guide Series reels are cast aluminum large-arbor reels with a disc drag and a convertible retrieve, in 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 sizes. A 9-foot 7-weight is a bass and streamer rod more than a trout rod, so the 3-weight is the one for small water.

Warranty

Cortland's warranty page says fly rods must be registered within 30 days of purchase to qualify for the Limited Lifetime Warranty, which covers defects in materials or workmanship for the original registered owner, and a fee may apply for damage not related to a manufacturing defect. For reels and lines, the general product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, with claims within one year of purchase, proof of purchase and a purchase from an authorized retailer. Normal wear and tear, damage from use, fire, theft and loss are excluded. The page asks you to contact Cortland before returning anything, and says terms may be "otherwise stated on the product."

That last line matters, because the Guide Series rods and outfits in our data list a 2-year warranty, not lifetime. Read the product listing for your model, and register the rod if the page offers registration.

How to choose

Match the single line weight to your rod. Then pick the taper to the water: a double taper for delicate presentation and a line you can turn around, a weight-forward for distance, a streamer or bass line for big flies. Check the length against your reel, and the backing against the reel's capacity. Fly lines wear out and get dirty, and our how to clean fly line and how long does fly line last guides cover when to replace one.

What this page cannot tell you

I haven't cast or tested any Cortland product, and I did not read buyer reviews. Head lengths, grain weights and temperature ratings aren't in our data, so I can't compare how the tapers load a rod. For those, read the maker's page for the exact line. This page is a snapshot of October 2026.

Where Cortland shows up

Questions about Cortland

What is the difference between Cortland 333 and 444 fly lines?

Both are long-running Cortland families. Cortland's history page says the 333 became the first fly line made with a bonded synthetic surface coating in 1953, and that the 444 series arrived in 1962, followed by the 444 SL in 1979. In our data the 444 SL is a 105-foot weight-forward floating line and the 444 Peach is a 90-foot double taper. The 333 lines are listed at 90 feet. I can't give you a performance comparison from the data, so read the maker's page for the taper you are considering.

What does the 'F' and 'S' mean on a Cortland line like WF8F?

WF means weight-forward, a taper with the weight concentrated in the front. The 8 is the line weight. The last letter is the density: F for floating, S for sinking. A DT3F is a double-taper, 3-weight, floating line. A WF5S is a weight-forward, 5-weight, sinking line. Our types of fly line guide covers the options.

What backing does Cortland sell and which should I buy?

Cortland backing in our data comes in two materials: Micron, a Dacron backing, in 20 lb (100, 250 and 1000 yard spools) and 30 lb, and gel-spun backing in 30, 50 and 65 lb on 300 yard spools. For trout reels, 20 lb Dacron is the common choice. Gel-spun is thinner for its strength, so more fits on the reel. Check your reel's capacity before you buy, and see our guide on how much backing a fly reel takes.

Does Cortland make fly rods?

Yes. Cortland's home page lists fly rods, reels and outfits, and our data shows euro nymph rods (the Competition MKII, the Nymph Series and the Guide Series Euro Nymph), Guide Series freshwater rods in 7-weight at 9 feet and 3-weight at 7 feet, and Guide outfits that pair a rod with a large-arbor reel, line, backing and leader. The Guide Series listings state a 2-year warranty.

What is Cortland's warranty?

Cortland's warranty page says fly rods registered within 30 days of purchase get a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials or workmanship, for the original registered owner. For reels and lines, the general product warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship, with claims within one year of purchase, proof of purchase, and an authorized retailer. The Guide Series rods and outfits in our data list a 2-year warranty, so the number on your product's listing may differ from the page. Contact Cortland before sending anything back.

Who owns Cortland?

Cortland's history page says a group of private investors acquired the company in 2012, and that John Wilson became president in 2015, the company's 100th year. It does not name the investors. The company still designs and manufactures fly lines in Cortland, New York, according to the same page.

Which Cortland line is for euro nymphing?

In our data, the Versatile Euro Nymph .022 DT is a 90-foot floating double-taper line with a braided nylon multifilament core. Cortland also sells euro nymph rods at 10.5 and 11 feet. Our euro nymphing setup guide covers how the pieces fit together.
