Which Winston model, if any
Who Winston is
R.L. Winston's own history page says the company was founded in 1929 in San Francisco by Robert Winther and Lew Stoner as the Winther-Stoner Manufacturing Co., and later renamed the R.L. Winston Rod Company. The site banner says "Bent Since 1929." Ownership then changed several times. Winther sold his interest to an employee, Red Loskot, in 1933. Doug Merrick bought Loskot's share in 1953 and became sole owner in 1957. Tom Morgan bought the company in 1973, and David Ondaatje bought it in 1991. The company moved to Twin Bridges, Montana in 1976 and into a new purpose-built rod facility there in 1995.
The most recent change came this year. Winston's announcement says an entity owned by Lance Robertson acquired the company, announced on May 14, 2026, with David Ondaatje as the seller. It says Andy Wunsch remains president and general manager, and it expects the team to stay. The same release lists the AIR 2 and PURE 2 rods, Bauer reels and polarized sunglasses among the continuing products, and says a limited number of bamboo rods will be made each year.
On technology, the history page says Winston introduced its boron/graphite composite rods in 1995, and the Winston PURE light-line rods in 2019. The Pure 2 on the maker's site is a newer version of that line. (I could not tell from our Amazon data which generation the two Pure listings are.)
What Winston sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track five Winston products on Amazon US: four fly rods and one fly line. There are two Pure rods (a 4-weight and a 5-weight, both 9 feet), two Air 2 rods (an 8-foot-6 4-weight and a 9-foot 6-weight) and the Trout Energy fly line. There are no Winston reels, waders or packs in our data, though the maker also sells Bauer reels.
Because Winston has fewer than eight products here, the table also lists alternatives from other brands, labeled as such, so you can compare. The alternatives are not a verdict on Winston. They are there to give you a wider choice at the same kind of job, which for now means mostly trout rods. Read the Brand column before you click.
In the table, a "maker" mark means the value is on Winston's own page, "listing" means the Amazon listing says so and the maker's page does not, and a dash means we could not confirm it. The two Pure listings are mostly "listing" values, and the Air 2 rods are mostly "maker."
The Winston rod lines and who each suits
Air 2. Winston's page calls it a flagship series for 3- to 6-weight fishing, with a fast action. The 3- and 4-weights are positioned for dry flies and light nymphing, and the 5- and 6-weights as all-around rods. The model list also reaches 7- and 8-weights, in 9-foot-6 lengths, outside that range. Each rod comes in a graphite tube with a sock, and the maker lists lengths from 8 foot 6 inches to 9 foot 6 inches. The page gives line weights only, with no rod weight in ounces. In our data, both Air 2 rods carry a box elder reel seat with up-locking nickel silver hardware, a hard tube and freshwater use. The 6-weight is the one for larger water or wind, the 4-weight at 8 foot 6 inches for small streams.
A fast action means the rod bends mostly near the tip. It suits distance, wind and heavier flies, and it gives you less margin for slow casting. If that's new, our fly rod action guide explains it.
Pure. The maker's current page describes the Pure 2 as dry-fly and technical trout rods for tailwaters, spring creeks and small streams. They are four-piece, built on NanoParticle double-bonded graphite, with a medium action per the specifications, in line weights 2 to 6. The page itself is slightly inconsistent on the action, so I'd call it medium. The two Pure listings on Amazon are both 9-foot rods that the listing calls moderate and four-piece. Moderate action means the rod bends deeper into the blank, which most people find forgiving at short range. Pair that with the right line and you have a classic small-water dry fly rod on paper.
Trout Energy line. A floating, weight-forward trout line, according to the Amazon listing, in weights 2 to 6. The maker says it has a 10-foot muted putty-colored stealth tip, a chartreuse belly and running line, welded loops at both ends and a supple core designed for freshwater, for cold and moderate temperatures. The taper is not stated on the maker's page, so the weight-forward taper is the listing's. See fly lines to compare.
What the alternatives are
The table's other ten rows come from three brands. Aventik rods are fast, four-piece graphite rods; in our data the Stalker, Whisperer and TroutFly rods list a 25-year warranty for the original owner. Lamson is represented by the Radius (a 10-foot 5-weight, medium-fast) and the E-Series (an 11-foot 3-weight euro-nymph rod). TFO appears with its Moment and Bluewater SG saltwater rods, which are not trout rods and do not belong in the same decision as a Winston Pure.
I'd read the alternatives as a menu of different jobs, not as substitutes. If you want a short light rod, see the Aventik Whisperer, whose 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-8 models cover very light line weights. If you want a longer rod for nymphing, see the Lamson E-Series. A fast, light, short rod is the closest match to the small-water Air 2 in our data, in the form of the Aventik Stalker, an 8-foot 3-weight at 2.65 oz per its maker.
Warranty
Winston calls it a lifetime guarantee. Its warranty page says every new boron/graphite and graphite fly rod and blank is covered against breakage or manufacturer defects, but only for the original owner of a rod bought from an authorized Winston dealer. The owner must return a completed warranty card or register the rod online. Winston chooses whether to repair the original rod or replace it with an equivalent one, and says some rods may no longer be repairable if materials are unavailable.
Exclusions are lost rods or sections, intentional breakage, misuse or neglect, and cosmetic wear or scratches. Winston also says it assumes no liability for incidental or consequential damages. For a claim you return the entire rod in its sock and tube and submit the repair form on the site, and the page says it aims to return a repaired rod within six weeks.
Two practical points. First, the guarantee depends on the dealer: if you buy from a seller on Amazon who is not an authorized dealer, the guarantee may not apply, and I would ask before buying. Second, register the rod when you buy it. (A warranty card is a form you fill in on the day you are happiest with the rod and least likely to need it. File it where you will find it.)
Reading the Winston rows in the table
Four things to look at. Length and pieces: every Winston rod here is four-piece, and the lengths are 8 foot 6 inches for the small Air 2 and 9 feet for the others. Case: the maker lists a graphite tube and a sock for the Air 2 and the Pure 2, and the table's case value shows whether we could confirm it for the model in front of you. Water: the Air 2 rods are marked freshwater, and the Pure listings carry no water type. Warranty: the guarantee is the same wording on every rod, and it depends on the original owner and an authorized dealer.
Winston rods sit in the higher price tiers we track at our last check, which is all I will say on that, since we never show prices. If you are comparing it to a rod from a lower tier, compare what the pages publish, which is warranty terms, a handcrafted-in-Montana statement and a tube in the box, and not an imagined difference in feel. I can't tell you how the rods cast. Nobody on this site has cast them for you.
How to choose
Start with the water and the fly. Small streams and dry flies point to the Pure or the 4-weight Air 2. Bigger water and wind point to the Air 2 6-weight. Then check the action: Winston's pages give medium for the Pure 2 and fast for the Air 2, which is a real difference at the same line weight. If you can't decide, the 5-weight rod page lists others across brands, and trout fly rods puts the Winston rods next to the rest.
Then check what the listing gives you. A rod with a "maker" mark has its length, weight and case confirmed. A "listing" value is still useful, but confirm it before spending real money on a hand-built rod. I'd also be careful with the new ownership: the announcement says the products continue, but I would check the maker's page for the current model before you buy, since models and listings can change between our weekly checks.
Our fly rod brands catalog lists everyone we cover, and the fast action fly rod page compares fast rods by brand.

Questions about Winston
Is there a Winston Pure fly rod review on this site?
No. We do not test rods, and I would not pass off a spec sheet as a review. What I can do is tell you what is published. Winston's current page describes the Pure 2 as a line of dry-fly and technical trout rods for tailwaters, spring creeks and small streams, with a medium action, a graphite blank and a box elder reel seat. Our Amazon data lists two Pure rods, a 4-weight and a 5-weight at 9 feet, as moderate action and four-piece, all from the Amazon listing, so confirm the details with Winston.
What is the difference between the Winston Pure and the Air 2?
On the maker's pages the Pure 2 is the medium-action line aimed at delicate presentations and small water, and the Air 2 is the fast-action flagship for 3- to 6-weight fishing, with a reach to 7- and 8-weights in the maker's model list. Both are four-piece, handcrafted in Twin Bridges, and supplied with a graphite tube and a sock. If you cast slowly or fish dry flies at short range, the medium action is the usual match. If you want more line speed in wind, the faster rod is.
Where are Winston fly rods made?
The maker's pages say the Air 2 and the Pure 2 are designed and handcrafted in Twin Bridges, Montana, USA. Winston's history page says the company moved to Twin Bridges in 1976 and into a new purpose-built rod facility there in 1995.
How does the Winston warranty work?
Winston calls it a lifetime guarantee. It covers every new boron/graphite and graphite fly rod and blank against breakage or manufacturer defects, and only for the original owner of a rod bought from an authorized dealer. The owner must return a warranty card or register the rod online. Winston chooses between repair and an equivalent replacement. Lost rods or sections, intentional breakage, misuse, neglect and cosmetic wear are excluded. You return the whole rod in its sock and tube. Read the warranty page before you buy from a seller who might not be an authorized dealer.
Who owns Winston?
An entity owned by Lance Robertson, according to Winston's announcement of May 14, 2026. The seller was David Ondaatje, who had owned the company since 1991. The announcement says Andy Wunsch remains president and general manager and that products continue.
Does Winston make a rod for euro nymphing or tenkara?
Not that I found in our Amazon data or on the pages I read. Winston lists the Air 2 and Pure 2 as trout rods for dry fly and nymph work. For euro-nymph rods from other brands, see our euro nymph rod page, and for tenkara see the tenkara page.
