Which Lamson model, if any
Who Lamson is
Lamson's About page says the company's journey began when Waterworks acquired the original Lamson brand in 1998. In 2023 the company dropped "Waterworks" from its name to simplify it, and it describes its home base as Idaho. The page says the founders came from a bike and design background and brought experience in lightweight components and precision machining to fly fishing, starting from a better fish-release tool. It does not give a founding year for the original Lamson brand, and I could not find a primary source for one, so I am not going to offer a date.
The company's own stated yardstick for a reel is retrieve rate per ounce: how much line each turn of the handle brings back, against how much the reel weighs. It says large arbor and its other design choices follow from that. It is a defensible measure, though it is a company's account of its own design, so read it as a sales philosophy and use the table to check the weights yourself.
The page also says that U.S. made metalwork, machining and precision engineering are at the core of everything the company does. It does not say where each model is made. For any model where origin matters to you, check the maker's product page.
What Lamson sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 40 Lamson products on Amazon US: 18 reels, 15 rods and 7 outfits. The table above shows all of them. Remember the marks under each value. "Maker" means Lamson's own page states it; "listing" means only the Amazon listing says it; a dash means we could not confirm the value and do not guess. Lamson publishes detailed specifications on its own pages, so most of what you will see in the table comes from the maker, and that makes the reels easier to compare.
Every product in our data carries the same warranty wording from the maker: a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner, covering defects in material or workmanship, with repair or replacement. More on that below.
The reels, and how the names fit together
Lamson's model names are a vocabulary test. Liquid, Liquid S, Liquid Max, Remix S, Guru S, Speedster S, Litespeed F, Purist II, Centerfire, Hyperspeed: ten names for what is, at first glance, a round aluminum thing that holds line. The table sorts them out, and so does the list below.
Liquid S and Remix S. Cast-and-machined aluminum, large arbor, sealed conical drag, convertible retrieve, in four sizes in our data (2 to 4, 4 to 6, 6 to 8 and 8 to 10 weights). In the 2 to 4 weight size the Liquid S is listed at 4.2 oz, in the 4 to 6 at 4.6 oz and in the 8 to 10 at 6.7 oz. The Remix S in our data has the same specifications as the Liquid S, so I treat it as a close sibling. There is also a three-pack of Liquid S spools. A conical drag uses cone-shaped friction surfaces to resist a running fish; the maker lists it as sealed, which means the drag is enclosed against water and grit.
Liquid Max. The bigger-fish version: an ultra-large arbor, cast and machined, with the 7 to 8 weight size at 8 oz and the 9 to 10 weight size at 9 oz. It is sold on its own and with outfits (see below).
Guru S. Machined aluminum, large arbor, sealed conical drag. In our data the 2 to 4 weight is 3.73 oz, the 4 to 6 weight is 4.41 oz and the 6 to 8 weight is 5.04 oz. The maker lists the frame as machined, a different way of making it from casting.
Speedster S. The same family of numbers with an ultra-large arbor: the 2 to 4 weight is 3.26 oz and the 4 to 6 weight is 3.83 oz, with a sealed conical drag. If you want the lightest sealed reel in the range, this is the one in our data.
Litespeed F. The lightest and the simplest: a 2 to 4 weight at 3.4 oz, ultra-large arbor, machined aluminum, conical drag, with 75 yards of 20 lb backing behind a WF4 line.
Purist II. The click-and-pawl reel: an ultra-large-arbor reel in 2 to 4 weight (2.7 oz) and 4 to 6 weight (3.1 oz) with a convertible retrieve. A click-and-pawl reel has a spring-loaded pawl clicking against a gear and gives a light, traditional check. It is for small trout and gentle fish, not for fish that run into your backing. See click-and-pawl fly reels for more.
Centerfire and Hyperspeed. The saltwater reels. The Centerfire is a large-arbor, sealed-drag reel in the 11 to 12 weight size at 8.9 oz, holding a WF12 line plus 300 yards of 30 lb backing. The Hyperspeed M8 is a machined 7 to 9 weight at 6.7 oz with a sealed conical drag and a 5.15 inch diameter. See saltwater fly reels.
Reading the reel columns
The Arbor column tells you how wide the spool core is. An ultra-large arbor, as on the Speedster S and Litespeed F, means line comes off in the loosest coils and each turn of the handle takes in more line. The Drag column tells you how the reel resists a fish. The Weight column is the most useful for comparing, because a 4 to 6 weight Litespeed or Speedster at around 3.4 to 3.8 oz and a Liquid at 4.6 oz differ by an ounce, which you may or may not feel at the end of a long day.
Match the reel to the rod, not the other way round. The line weight range on the reel should include your rod's line weight. The Backing column in our specs gives the capacity as the maker states it, for example a WF6 line plus 100 yards of 20 lb backing. Our fly reel size guide explains how to pick, and how much backing goes on a fly reel covers the rest.
The rods
The 15 rods fall into a handful of lines. All are four-piece except the two-piece Purist 4-weight, and all are listed with a lockdown reel seat or an anodized aluminum one.
Guru. A medium-fast, 9-foot, four-piece graphite line in 4 to 7 weights, listed for trout, bass and pike. The 5-weight is 3.2 oz per the maker.
Liquid. Medium-fast, 9 feet, in 5, 6 and 8 weights; the 5-weight is 3.6 oz with a composite cork handle. The Liquid Max rod is a fast 8-weight with a full wells handle and a fighting butt, a short extension behind the grip to brace against.
Velocity. A fast 9-foot 5-weight at 2.7 oz, listed for trout, bass and pike, with no fighting butt.
Purist. A 4-weight, 9-foot, two-piece rod at 2.4 oz for trout, though the listing is the only source for its freshwater label.
Radius. A 10-foot, medium-fast 5-weight with a fighting butt and a wood-insert reel seat, listed for trout. A longer rod mends line and reaches over currents more easily, at the cost of a little more weight in the hand.
E-Series. An 11-foot, 3-weight euro-nymph rod with a down-locking seat and a reverse half wells handle. See euro nymph rods and what euro nymphing is.
Cobalt. The saltwater line: extra-fast, 9-foot, four-piece rods in 7, 8 and 10 weights, listed for bonefish, permit, tarpon and giant trevally. The 8-weight is 4.4 oz.
Rod action is covered in our fly rod action guide. In short, medium-fast flexes deeper into the blank and forgives slower casting, while fast and extra-fast put the bend nearer the tip and suit wind, distance and heavier flies.
The outfits
Seven outfits appear in our data. The Liquid Outfit in 5 and 8 weights pairs a Liquid rod with a Liquid S reel; the 5-weight lists a 90-foot floating weight-forward line, 20 lb Dacron backing and a 9-foot leader in the box. The Liquid Max Outfits (6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 weights) pair a fast Liquid Max rod and reel but come unlined, with no line, backing or leader. That difference matters: if you buy a Liquid Max Outfit you still need a line, and our fly lines page is the place to start. See also fly rod combos.
Warranty
Lamson's warranty page states that its lifetime warranty is valid for any defect in material or workmanship for the original owner of a reel or rod. Lamson may repair or replace the product at its discretion, and replacement parts or colors may not match the original. Damage from misuse, improper maintenance or modification is excluded.
For a claim, the page asks you to fill out the warranty return form. For a reel, send the complete frame and spool and remove the line if you can. For a rod, send all four pieces in a rod tube. A flat shipping-and-handling fee applies to both. Overseas customers are routed to the distributors named on the page. The phrase "original owner" is worth a second look: if you bought through Amazon, keep the order record, since it is your proof of ownership. (The warranty paper has a way of ending up wherever the receipts go, so file it where you will find it.)
How to choose
Start with the rod. Choose the line weight for your water and fish (our fly rod weight chart helps), then pick a reel whose range includes it. For small streams and light lines, the Litespeed F, Speedster S and Purist II are the lightest options in our data. For general trout, bass and smallmouth work, the Liquid S, Guru S and Remix S in the 4 to 6 weight size cover a 5-weight line and differ in weight, frame and retrieve. For bigger fish and heavier lines, look at the Liquid Max, Hyperspeed and Centerfire.
A common mistake is buying a reel for the rod you hope to own. Lamson sells reels in 2-to-4, 4-to-6, 6-to-8 and 8-to-10 weight steps, so check which step your line falls in. Another is assuming a sealed drag matters for every angler: it protects the drag from water and grit, which is useful in salt or sandy rivers and less so on a clean freestone creek.
For what the fly reel does, see parts of a fly reel, and for other brands, the fly reels page.

Questions about Lamson
What is the Lamson warranty?
Lamson's warranty page says its lifetime warranty is valid for any defect in material or workmanship for the original owner of a reel or rod, and that the company may repair or replace the item at its discretion. Damage from misuse, improper maintenance or modification is excluded. For a claim you fill out the warranty return form and send the reel frame and spool, or all four pieces of a rod in a tube, to the address on the page. A flat shipping-and-handling fee applies, and replacement parts or colors may not match the original, so read the page before you send anything.
What is the difference between the Lamson Liquid and Liquid S?
On the maker's pages the Liquid S is the reel, a cast-and-machined aluminum large-arbor reel with a sealed conical drag and a convertible retrieve, sold in four sizes in our data. The Liquid is also the name of the rod line and of the Liquid Outfit, which pairs a Liquid S reel with a Liquid rod. If a listing says only Liquid, check the title and the line weight to see whether you are looking at a reel, a rod or an outfit.
Is the Lamson Guru a good fly reel?
I do not test reels, so I can only compare what the maker publishes. The Guru S is a machined aluminum reel with a large arbor, a sealed conical drag and a listing for all water. Its 4 to 6 weight size is listed at 4.41 oz, which is lighter than the Liquid S in the same range at 4.6 oz and heavier than the Speedster S at 3.83 oz. Pick it for a machined frame at a middle weight, not because anything says it is the best reel.
What is the Lamson Litespeed reel?
The Litespeed F is a machined aluminum reel with an ultra-large arbor and a conical drag. In our data the 2 to 4 weight size weighs 3.4 oz and holds a WF4 line plus 75 yards of 20 lb backing per the maker. It suits light-line trout and small-stream fishing. We have no maker statement that the drag is sealed.
Are Lamson reels made in the USA?
The maker's About page says that U.S. made metalwork, machining and precision engineering are at the core of everything the company does. It does not say where each model is made, so I would check the product page for the model you want before assuming it.
Which Lamson reel fits a 5-weight rod?
Look for a reel whose line weight range includes 5. In our data the Liquid S, Guru S, Remix S and Speedster S in the 4 to 6 weight size cover a 5-weight line, and so does the Purist II in the same range. They differ in weight, arbor size and drag, so compare those columns in the table.
Does Lamson make waders or wading boots?
Not that we found on Amazon US. The company sells reels, rods and outfits there, and its About page describes reels and rods. For waders, start with our waders page.
