Which Magellan Outdoors model, if any
Magellan Outdoors waders on Amazon US
We found no Magellan Outdoors waders on Amazon US at our last check (October 2026). The models I could confirm are on the Academy Sports + Outdoors site, so this page describes what Academy lists, says plainly what I could not find, and explains how the alternatives in the table were chosen.
One honest limit first. Academy's pages name Magellan Outdoors as the brand, but the pages I read do not say who makes the waders or whether Magellan is Academy's own label. I'm not going to state either, and everything below about the waders comes from retailer listings, not from a maker's specification sheet. There is no "maker" mark for these pairs.
What Academy lists
Pro men's waders. A woven polyester wader with a 3-ply waterproof layer, adjustable stocking feet, reinforced knees and a removable waterproof pouch, marketed for hunting. "Adjustable stocking feet" is the listing's phrase for the booties, which suggests a fit adjustment at the foot.
Freeport breathable stockingfoot. Offered in men's and women's versions, polyester with a 3-ply waterproof fabric. The men's version is listed for hunting and fishing, and the women's for hunting only.
Mag2 breathable stockingfoot. The one aimed at anglers. The listing names a Waist Lock System and two expandable gussets for fit.
Sportsman 800 bootfoot. Insulated neoprene with a 3.5 mm body and lightweight 800 g Thinsulate Ultra Tracker-X boots.
Swamplander1200. A camouflage bootfoot in neoprene and polyester knit. The name suggests 1,200 g boots, but the pages I read do not confirm it.
Neoprene Bootfoot. A men's 3.5 mm neoprene, insulated, rubber-boot style wader.
Kids' breathable wader. A 3-ply polyester wader for sizes 8 to 20, aimed at fishing and hunting.
Academy also lists a men's Shoreline side-zip wading boot, but I did not read its specs.
How the alternatives were picked
The table shows 15 alternatives, picked by one rule:
- Same type: waders.
- Hunting use: only waders that the maker or the listing puts in hunting, or fishing-and-hunting, use, because these are hunting-oriented waders.
- The closest price tier, and the maker publishes foot type, construction, warranty and fit options.
- No Amazon house brands.
The result is all bootfoot, mostly insulated, from Banded, Drake, Avery and Frogg Toggs, with both breathable and neoprene pairs. The closest match to the Magellan Sportsman 800 is the Frogg Toggs Amphib neoprene. There is no close match in this table for the Mag2 and Freeport, which are stockingfoot, because the hunting filter leaves stockingfoot pairs out. For stockingfoot pairs, use the stockingfoot waders page.
Retailer-brand waders: what to expect and what to check
A retailer-listed brand is a different purchase from a wader-maker's brand, and I don't mean that as a criticism. You get a store you can return to. What you may not get is a manufacturer's wader page with a spec table. So you have to ask the questions yourself.
- What is the wader made of? The Academy pages answer for the shell (polyester, neoprene) but not for the membrane.
- How many layers, and who counted them? "3-ply" is a construction claim.
- What is the warranty? I found none stated. Ask the store, and keep the receipt. (The receipt is easiest to find in a drawer that is not the Hook Drawer.)
- What are the sizes? The Pro and Freeport pages I read gave no chart. The kids' wader runs 8 to 20.
- Is there a gravel guard, and what is the bootie made of? Stockingfoot waders need both for river wading.
How to read the table
Each value carries a mark. "Maker" means the manufacturer's page states it, "claimed" means a maker claim without an independent standard, "listing" means only the Amazon listing says so, and a dash means not confirmed.
Foot. Bootfoot waders have the boot attached, stockingfoot waders end in a neoprene bootie. This is the first decision. For standing in water, bootfoot is simple. For walking, stockingfoot with a wading boot is kinder to your feet. See bootfoot vs stockingfoot waders.
Material type. Neoprene is warm and stretchy and does not breathe. Breathable fabric lets vapour escape. See the breathable vs neoprene guide.
Insulation. Boot insulation in grams. The table runs from 200 to 1,600. A comfort rating in degrees Fahrenheit is given for the Banded Phantom X pairs only.
Fit. Short, tall, stout, king and big options. If your build is not average, fit options matter more than the label size.
Warranty. From one year to four, per the makers. The Magellan pages I read state none.
Choosing between the alternatives
For fishing on foot: this table will not help much, since every pair is bootfoot. If you need a stockingfoot wader like the Mag2 or Freeport, start with the stockingfoot waders page and the best fly fishing waders page. For a breathable bootfoot that is listed for fishing and hunting, the Drake Guardian Elite pairs in the table are the nearest.
For cold standing water: the Banded Phantom X Insulated and the Avery Originals Insulated list 1,600 g boots and body insulation. The Phantom X gives a stated comfort range of -10 to 50 degrees F.
For mixed seasons: Drake's Hardline pairs have 800 g boots, three layers per the maker, and three-year warranties. The uninsulated version is the one to pick if you add layers underneath.
For rough cover: Drake's BMF1600 lists Kevlar, reinforced knees and a four-year warranty.
For the plainest neoprene: the Frogg Toggs Amphib 3.5 mm.
Kids' waders
Academy lists a kids' breathable wader in sizes 8 to 20. If you buy waders for a child, check the fit for growth and for layers, and read the kids waders page and the youth wader size chart. Waders do not float, a child near moving water needs an adult within reach, and I'd put a wading belt on any chest-high pair.
Sizing
I did not find a Magellan size chart in the pages I read. Stockingfoot waders are sized by body: chest, waist, inseam and height. Bootfoot waders are sized by boot size first. For Academy's pairs, use the retailer's information. For the alternatives, use the size chart on the maker's page. Our wader size chart guide shows how to measure. I haven't read enough buyer feedback on Magellan waders to say how they fit.
Common mistakes
Buying neoprene for a long walk. Neoprene heats up, and a hiker in 3.5 mm neoprene sweats into the liner. Neoprene is for standing.
Buying breathable for deep winter without layers. A breathable shell does not insulate. Your layers do.
Skipping the belt. On any chest wader, a snug wading belt limits how much water enters in a fall.
Reading a listing when there is no maker spec sheet
Retailer pages tend to give you feature names, and the names need translating.
Waist Lock System. The Mag2 listing uses this name. I could not find a description of how it works. It points to an adjustable waist, and an adjustable waist is useful because a chest wader that is too loose at the waist lets the fabric bunch and wear. Look for a plain description of the mechanism before you rely on the name.
Expandable gussets. A gusset is an extra panel of fabric, usually in the crotch or the knee, that gives you room to step up and squat. Gussets add seams, and seams are where a wader works hardest, so check the warranty covers them.
Adjustable stocking feet. The Pro listing uses this phrase. It suggests the booties can be tightened or resized, which could help with fit inside a wading boot. Without the maker's explanation, treat it as a feature to ask about.
Polyester, 3-ply. The shell material and the number of bonded layers. Neither tells you how breathable the wader is, because breathability depends on the membrane, which the pages I read do not name. There is no breathability rating to compare on these pages, and I won't invent one.
Thinsulate Ultra Tracker-X boots, 800 g. The 800 g figure is boot insulation. It is comparable with the gram figures in the table, which are also boot insulation, and it is at the lighter end.
Hunting waders and fishing waders from the same shelf
Academy sells Magellan waders for both uses, and the labels matter. A wader marketed for hunting is built for sitting still and kneeling in brush, with camouflage, quiet fabric and often insulation. A wader marketed for angling is built for walking, with a breathable shell, gravel guards and a bootie that fits a wading boot. Many waders are labelled for both. If you plan to do both, choose the activity that puts more strain on the wader, and check that the foot type works for the other.
Care in short
Rinse mud, salt and sunscreen off after each trip, dry the waders inside out, away from heaters and direct sun, and store them hanging or loosely rolled. Fold lines that stay folded become wear lines. Our wader cleaning and storage guides have the steps, and how to find a leak in waders covers the day something drips.
The short version
If the Magellan waders you saw are stockingfoot and breathable, this table is the wrong place, so use the pairs on the stockingfoot page. If they are neoprene bootfoot, compare them with the Frogg Toggs Amphib and the Drake Hardline. In both cases, ask the same three questions: what is the warranty, what are the fit options, and what exactly does the insulation figure refer to.
Where to go next
Start with waders, then breathable waders, neoprene waders and hunting waders. For a written selection rule, see best fly fishing waders.

Questions about Magellan Outdoors
Are Magellan Outdoors waders on Amazon?
Not at our last check in October 2026. We searched Amazon US for Magellan Outdoors waders and found no live listing we could confirm. The models I could find are listed on Academy Sports + Outdoors' own site. Stock changes, so the answer can change.
What waders does Magellan Outdoors sell?
Academy lists, among others, the Pro men's waders, the Freeport breathable stockingfoot (men's and women's), the Mag2 breathable stockingfoot, the Sportsman 800 bootfoot, the Swamplander1200 bootfoot, a men's neoprene bootfoot and a kids' breathable wader. Models change from season to season, so check the retailer's page for the current list.
Are Magellan waders breathable?
Several are. The Pro, Freeport and Mag2 listings describe polyester or woven polyester construction with a 3-ply waterproof layer, and Academy calls the Freeport and Mag2 breathable stockingfoot waders. The Sportsman, Swamplander and Neoprene Bootfoot are neoprene, which is not breathable.
Are Magellan waders good for fly fishing?
The Mag2 is described as an angling wader, with a Waist Lock System and two expandable gussets. The Freeport is listed for both hunting and fishing in the men's version, and for hunting only in the women's. The Pro is marketed for hunting. I have no maker specs beyond the retailer's pages, so I can't say how any of them wades in a real river.
What does 3-ply mean on waders?
It is a construction claim: the waterproof fabric is built from three bonded layers. Makers count layers differently and there is no common standard, so 3-ply on one wader is not the same thing as three layers on another. Compare the warranty and the reinforcement, not just the number.
How do I size Magellan waders?
I did not find a Magellan size chart in the pages I read, so I won't copy or guess one. Stockingfoot waders are sized by body, with wading boots bought separately. Bootfoot waders are sized by boot. The kids' wader is listed in sizes 8 to 20. Use Academy's size information for the exact model, and see our wader size chart guide for how to measure.
What is the Magellan waders warranty?
I could not find a warranty statement for Magellan waders on the pages I read. Before buying, check the product page and the retailer's return policy, and keep your receipt. In the table, warranty lengths of one to four years are listed for the alternatives, per their makers.
