Who Thomas & Thomas is

The company's history page says Thomas & Thomas was established in 1969 by Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell, and its About page describes Dorsey building bamboo fly rods in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania when the company began. Later, a purchase of rodmaking equipment and bamboo led him to western Massachusetts, where the company grew. The About page says Dorsey lived from 1938 to 2024.

On ownership, the history page says ownership "evolved over time" but names only the current owner, Neville Orsmond, who it says acquired the company in 2014. The About page says he took over as CEO that year and describes a commitment to American-made and American-serviced products. The Zone, Sextant and Avantt II pages say the rods are handcrafted in Greenfield, Massachusetts. I didn't find a maker statement on whether every component is made in the United States, so I'll stay with what the maker says: handcrafted in Greenfield.

One honest note on dates: some trade articles give slightly different years for the sale to the current owner. I'm using 2014 because it is the maker's own statement.

What Thomas & Thomas sells on Amazon US now

At our last check (October 2026) we track 19 Thomas & Thomas fly rods on Amazon US. There are no reels, kits or lines from this brand in our data. The table above lists them with the specs we could confirm. A "maker" mark means the value is on Thomas & Thomas's own page, a "listing" mark means the Amazon listing says so and the maker's page does not, and a dash means we have not confirmed it anywhere.

The split is easy to remember. Eight are Zone rods, five are Sextant saltwater rods, and the rest are single listings: an Avantt II, an Exocett Predator, a plain 904-4, two DNA spey rods and a Contact II. The Zone and Sextant rods have maker pages, so more of their values are confirmed. Most of the other listings carry only what Amazon says.

How to read a Thomas & Thomas model number

The digits before the hyphen carry the length and the line weight, and the number after the hyphen is the number of pieces. The order is not consistent, though, so read the table instead of decoding by hand. The Zone 908-4 is a 9-foot 8-weight and the Zone 910-4 is a 9-foot 10-weight, while the Sextant 1190-4 is a 9-foot 11-weight. The Zone 763-4 is a 7-foot-6 3-weight. On the Avantt II page a 905 is a 9-foot 5-weight and a 1004 is a 10-foot 4-weight.

The pattern breaks down for the names with words in them. The DNA Short Spey 6wt 11'2" and the Contact II 2wt 10'9" give length and weight in the name, and the Exocett Predator gives only a listing length.

The rod lines and who each suits

Zone. The maker's page says the Zone "pushes the envelope in both performance and price" and uses the StratoTherm resin from the Avantt and Exocett lines. It describes the 4-weight as medium-fast and the 5- to 10-weights as fast. Freshwater models run from 4- to 7-weight, with chrome single-foot guides, and saltwater models from 8- to 10-weight with Snake Brand guides. In our data the maker pages confirm fast action, a full-wells grip, a hard tube and a fighting butt on the 6- to 10-weights, with the 6 and 7 listed for freshwater and the 8, 9 and 10 for saltwater. The Zone is the line to look at if you want a fast rod with a clear freshwater and saltwater split.

Two Zone listings do not match the maker's page. The maker's page lists 9-foot rods, while the Amazon listings include an 8-foot-6 4-weight and a 10-foot 7-weight. The page I read lists the 4-weight at 9 feet, so I can't tell you whether the listing is an older model, a custom length or a mistake. Treat those values as listing values.

Sextant. The maker describes the Sextant as its saltwater flagship series: fast action, 9 feet, "powerful, pin-point accuracy," with a reinforcement strategy to help the rod load quickly. In our data it comes in 6-, 7-, 8-, 9- and 11-weights, with maker rod weights from 3.31 oz for the 6-weight to 4.58 oz for the 11-weight, and all have a full-wells grip and a fighting butt. A fast action means the rod bends mostly near the tip, which suits wind and distance and gives you less margin for slow casting. The maker states that RECoil and CeRECoil models are typically built to order, so what is on Amazon is one part of the range.

Avantt II. The maker says this is a redesigned second generation of the Avantt series, uses five fibers bound with an aerospace resin and is fast in action. All models are four-piece. The maker's table lists lengths from 8 feet 6 inches to 10 feet and line weights from 3 to 8, and the page does not say whether a case is included, so check the listing. We track one Avantt II listing. It has a maker page, but the listing does not give us a line weight, so our table shows a dash for it.

Exocett Predator and the plain 904-4. Both are listing-only. The Exocett Predator is listed at 112 inches, and the 904-4 is a 4-weight, 9-foot rod listed for trout. Nothing else is confirmed.

DNA spey. Two spey rods: a 6-weight at 11 feet 2 inches and a 7-weight at 11 feet 7 inches, both four-piece per the listing, with the 6-weight listed as graphite with a down-locking milled aluminum reel seat. A spey rod is a two-handed rod for casting from a position where there is no room for a backcast. Read what a spey rod is first if you have not cast one, and our spey rod page for comparisons.

Contact II. A 2-weight, 10 foot 9 inch, four-piece rod, according to the listing. At that length and weight it points at small-stream nymphing and light lines. Every value is the listing's, so confirm it with the maker.

Warranty

The maker's Superior Warranty page says graphite and fiberglass fly rods are covered against breakage caused by defects in materials, manufacturing or workmanship, for the life of the original purchaser, as long as that person still owns the rod. Normal wear and tear is excluded. The remedy is repair or replacement, and replacement parts may differ in material or color if the model has been discontinued.

Three conditions matter. The rod must be bought from an authorized Thomas & Thomas dealer. The warranty card or online registration must reach the company within 30 days of purchase. And the owner pays to send the rod in, plus a charge for return shipping, handling and mailing insurance. Lost sections or lost rods, abuse or neglect, intentional breakage and modifications are excluded, though excluded damage can still be repaired for a reasonable charge.

The page calls it "Superior." (Superior to what is the question a Marketing Copy never answers, which is why the conditions are worth reading.) Our data shows the same conditions on every Thomas & Thomas listing, but they are the maker's, so if you buy on Amazon, check that the seller is an authorized dealer. If you cannot tell, ask the seller and keep the receipt.

Build time and availability

Thomas & Thomas describes its rods as handcrafted and some as built to order. The Zone and Avantt II pages mention a build time of two to three weeks when a rod is not in stock, and the Sextant page says the RECoil and CeRECoil versions are typically built to order with a longer lead time. That matters for how you read Amazon. A rod on Amazon is stock that exists now, usually in a standard configuration, and it can disappear when the last one sells. Our availability checks run weekly, so a model can drop out of the table between checks.

It also means the maker's page may show a configuration or a weight that Amazon does not carry. If you want a specific reel seat or a longer fighting butt, as on the Avantt II 6- to 8-weights, the maker's page is where to look.

How to choose between them

Start with the water. For freshwater, the Zone 6- and 7-weights and the Avantt II are the fast-action choices. For saltwater, the Sextant is the maker's flagship and the Zone 8-, 9- and 10-weights are the other maker-confirmed option. For two-handed casting, the DNA spey rods are the only ones in the range, and they come from the listing alone.

Then think about action. Every rod in the Zone, Sextant and Avantt II group is fast, which suits wind and distance and costs you forgiveness at short range. If you want a softer rod to learn on, this is not the brand I'd start with, and the fast action rods page shows other makers. For the line-weight choice, see our fly rod weight chart and the fly rod action guide.

Last, check the model. A bare code such as 904-4 can mean several different rods across the maker's lines, so match the code to the length and weight you want before you buy.

For other rods at the same stage, the 8-weight, 5-weight and saltwater pages let you compare across brands, and the fly rod brands catalog lists everyone we cover.

Where Thomas & Thomas shows up

Questions about Thomas & Thomas

Where are Thomas & Thomas fly rods made?

The maker's product pages say the rods are handcrafted in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The Zone and Sextant pages use that wording, and the Avantt II page says it is handcrafted in Greenfield, MA, USA. The About page says the company has a strong commitment to an American-made and serviced product.

What is the Thomas & Thomas Zone fly rod?

The Zone is a series of fast-action rods, with freshwater models in 4- to 7-weights and saltwater models in 8- to 10-weights on the maker's page. The maker says it uses the StratoTherm resin from the Avantt and Exocett lines. On Amazon US we track Zone rods from a 3-weight to a 10-weight. Five of them have maker pages, and the listings that do not are shown with listing values only.

How does the Thomas & Thomas warranty work?

The maker's Superior Warranty page says graphite and fiberglass fly rods are covered against breakage caused by defects in materials, manufacturing or workmanship, for the life of the original purchaser. The rod must be bought from an authorized dealer, and the warranty card or online registration must reach Thomas & Thomas within 30 days of purchase. Lost sections, abuse, neglect and modifications are excluded, and a return shipping, handling and insurance charge applies to repairs. If you bought a rod from a seller who is not an authorized dealer, read the page first, because that decides whether the warranty applies.

Who owns Thomas & Thomas?

Neville Orsmond. The company's history page says he acquired the company in 2014 and is the current owner, and the About page lists him as CEO from 2014. The page says ownership evolved over time, without dates for earlier owners.

Does Thomas & Thomas make spey rods?

Yes. In our data there are two DNA spey rods on Amazon US, a 6-weight at 11 feet 2 inches and a 7-weight at 11 feet 7 inches, and the Amazon listings describe them as four-piece spey rods. We found no maker page for them, so those values come from the listing. See our spey rod page for other brands.

Which Thomas & Thomas rod is best for saltwater?

The maker describes the Sextant as its saltwater flagship series, in fast action at 9 feet. In our data there are Sextant rods in 6-, 7-, 8-, 9- and 11-weights, with weights from 3.31 oz to 4.58 oz. The Zone 8-, 9- and 10-weights are also listed for saltwater. I would not name a single best one. The line weight for your fish decides it.
