Which Galvan model, if any
Who Galvan is
A California Fly Fisher profile says the company was started by Boni Galvan with his wife Carmen. Boni worked in farm labor, took a machining class and, after a reel broke, built his own fly reel, first in his garage. The same profile says the Galvan Torque won Fly Fish America's reel of the year in 2004, which brought the company national attention, and that the reels are machined from aluminum bar stock in a modest industrial building at 21103 Longeway Road in Sonora, California. "Everything but the screws are made by the Galvan family," the profile says, with Boni and Carmen's children and grandchildren all working in the business.
Galvan's own home page shows a Made in U.S.A. logo and the Sonora address. The maker's pages I read do not give a founding year, and I have seen different years in other places, so I leave the year out.
What Galvan sells on Amazon US now
At our last check (October 2026) we track 16 Galvan reels on Amazon US. There are no Galvan rods, lines or waders in our data, so this is a reels-only page. The list breaks down as:
- 7 Torque listings: the T-4, T-5, T-6, T-7, T-8 and T-12, plus one listing for a Torque size 6 in black.
- 4 Rush Light reels (R-3, R-4, R-5, R-6 LT).
- 3 Brookie reels (0-1, 2-3, 4-5).
- 1 The Grip (G-8).
- 1 G.E.N. (the Galvan Euro Nymph, 3.7).
In the table above, a small mark sits under each value. "Maker" means Galvan's own page states it, "listing" means only the Amazon listing does, and "—" means we could not confirm it. Almost every Galvan reel here has a maker page, so most values show "maker". The black size 6 listing has no maker page in our data.
The Torque
Galvan's page says the Torque introduced the Torque Drag System with the Torque's 2004 release, and now uses it in all of its reels. The maker's page lists cut-outs on the frame, spool, drag knob and reel foot to reduce weight while keeping strength, rounded rims on the spool and frame for impact durability, and a contoured, counterbalanced spool. It lists nine sizes, T-3 through T-12, from 4.2 oz to 8.6 oz, and calls the reels saltwater safe, which is a maker claim, not a lab result.
The sizes we track map like this on the maker's page:
| Size | Line weight | Weight | Diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-4 | 4 to 5 | 4.5 oz | 3.25 in |
| T-5 | 5 to 6 | 4.8 oz | 3.5 in |
| T-6 | 6 to 7 | 5.2 oz | 3.75 in |
| T-7 | 7 | 6.3 oz | 3.875 in |
| T-8 | 8 | 7.6 oz | 4.0 in |
| T-12 | 12 | 8.6 oz | 4.5 in |
The T-9 (a 9-weight, 4.125 inches, 7.9 oz on the maker's page) and the T-10 are not in our Amazon data, so a search for a Galvan T-9 will not find one in the table. The black size 6 listing says 6 to 7 weight, which matches the T-6, but it does not link a maker page, so I can only say what the listing says.
The Rush Light
The maker describes the Rush Light as a rugged, durable large-arbor reel with an open-back, three-spoke frame, lightened and restyled in 2012 from the original Rush series. It uses the same internal components and materials as the Torque, with reduced machining and hand work. The page pitches it at anglers who want one reel for the long term, for guiding clients, or as a dependable reel for experienced anglers. It lists sizes R-3 LT to R-12 LT, and we track R-3, R-4, R-5 and R-6.
If you want the Torque's internals in a simpler frame, the Rush Light is the maker's own answer. The practical difference you can see in the table is weight: the R-4 LT is 4.8 oz against 4.5 oz for the T-4,, and the frames differ.
The Brookie
The Brookie is a light trout reel in four sizes from 0-1 to 4-5, weighing from 2.54 oz to 3.20 oz. The maker says it does not use a traditional click-and-pawl system but a Click-Ball Tension System: minimal moving parts, adjusted by turning an Allen wrench a few times. It is machined from 6061 aluminum bar stock, and the page says it is aimed at trout anglers who fish light tackle on technical water and like to palm the spool. Our data lists the drag as click-and-pawl, so read the maker's description for the exact mechanism. (The Brookie is named after a fish that has never demanded a sealed drag.)
If the idea of a click drag is new, our click-and-pawl reels page explains it and lists others.
The Grip
The maker describes The Grip as a reel for anglers who want a fully sealed drag for harsh conditions. A watertight, easy-access hub encases the whole drag, so only anodized aluminum is exposed. It has two hybrid ceramic ball bearings, carbon fiber in the drag, a quick-turn knob for spool release, and a "Monster" grip handle. The maker lists sizes G-5 to G-12, and we track the G-8 at 8.2 oz and 4.0 inches across. It is the only Galvan reel in our data with a drag the maker calls sealed.
G.E.N.: the Galvan Euro Nymph
The G.E.N. is built for euro nymphing. The maker calls the arbor extreme large and describes a closed frame, which leaves no gap between the spool and the frame where a thin euro nymph line could slip. It has a three-pawl drag engagement, a Gun Metal Grey finish, a 2 to 5 weight rating and a capacity of 100 yards of SA Comp Nymph line over 20 pound backing. It fits Torque and Rush spools. We track the 3.7 at 5.22 oz. If euro nymphing is new to you, read what euro nymphing is and our euro nymphing setup guide, and the euro nymph rod page lists rods for it.
The Swing, and what is not in the table
The maker also lists the Swing, a mid-arbor reel built mainly for spey fishing, with a full cage and a classic back, in sizes S 2-3 (7.5 oz) through S 10+ (11.7 oz), and with its Grip Drag System. We do not track a Swing on Amazon US, so there is no Swing row to compare.
How to read a Galvan listing
Every Galvan row has a line weight range, a diameter, a weight and a backing capacity. The capacity is written as a line plus a length of backing, such as WF-5-F plus 125 yards of 20 pound micron backing. Check it against your line before you order, and for a long run, count the backing you need. Our fly reel size guide, the parts of a fly reel and the guide to how much backing goes on a fly reel explain the numbers.
Matching a Galvan to your rod
Start with the rod's printed line weight and pick the reel whose range includes it. A rod marked 5 fits the T-4 (4 to 5), the T-5 (5 to 6), the R-4 LT and R-5 LT, or the Brookie 4-5. When two sizes fit, the lower number is lighter and the higher number holds more backing. That trade matters on water where a fish can run, and matters little on a small creek.
Then check the balance. A reel is part of the rod's weight, and the table shows each reel's weight so you can compare. The gap between a Brookie 4-5 at 3.20 oz and a Torque T-5 at 4.8 oz is the kind of thing you notice on an all-day small-stream rod.
Common mistakes
- Reading the size as the line weight. A T-8 is an 8-weight reel. A T-6 spans 6 to 7. Read the range, not the number in the name.
- Assuming every Galvan has a sealed drag. The maker calls only The Grip sealed in our data.
- Forgetting the dealer rule. The lifetime warranty is for original owners who bought from an authorized dealer.
Warranty
Galvan's warranty page says all reels carry a lifetime warranty covering all parts and workmanship under normal use and conditions. It applies to the original owner, only for a reel bought from an authorized Galvan dealer, with warranty registration or proof of purchase. Covered reels are repaired or replaced at no charge, and Galvan decides which, and may substitute current models or parts for discontinued ones. Replacement colors may differ. Repairs outside the warranty are charged. To return a reel you remove the line and backing and ship it in a protected box with a note, your contact details and proof of purchase from an authorized dealer. Read the page for the current terms.
The point to take from this is that "lifetime" depends on where you bought it. A reel from an unauthorized seller may not be covered.
Choosing a Galvan reel
- Light trout rod, 2 to 5 weight. The Brookie, for low weight and a click drag. The Rush Light R-3 or R-4 if you want a disc drag.
- General trout and steelhead, 5 to 8 weight. The Torque T-5 to T-8.
- Silt or salt. The Grip, since it is the sealed one.
- Euro nymphing. The G.E.N., if your rod is a 2 to 5 weight.
- Saltwater, heavy lines. The Torque T-12, per the maker's claims.
For a wider choice, the fly reels section, the trout reels page, the saltwater reels page and the best fly reels list apply plain rules across brands.
Where Galvan shows up
Questions about Galvan
Where are Galvan reels made?
Galvan's site carries a Made in U.S.A. logo and lists a Sonora, California address. A magazine profile of the company describes the reels being machined from aluminum bar stock by the Galvan family in a Sonora industrial building and says everything but the screws is made by the family.
What is the difference between the Galvan Torque and the Rush Light?
The maker says the Rush Light was lightened and restyled in 2012 from the original Rush series and uses the same internal components and materials as the Torque series, with reduced machining and hand work. The Rush Light has an open-back, three-spoke frame. The Torque has cut-outs on the frame, spool, drag knob and reel foot, and the maker's page dates the Torque Drag System to the Torque's 2004 release.
What sizes does the Galvan Torque come in?
The maker's page lists nine models, T-3 through T-12, from 4.2 oz in the T-3 to 8.6 oz in the T-12. On Amazon US we track the T-4, T-5, T-6, T-7, T-8 and T-12, plus a listing for a size 6 in black. The T-9 and the T-10 are on the maker's page but not in our Amazon data.
What is the Galvan Brookie?
A light click-style trout reel in four sizes from 0-1 to 4-5 weight, machined from 6061 aluminum bar stock, with weights from 2.54 to 3.20 oz. The maker says it does not use a traditional click and pawl but its own Click-Ball Tension System, adjusted with an Allen wrench.
Does Galvan make a spey reel?
The maker lists the Swing, a mid-arbor reel built mainly for spey fishing, in sizes S 2-3 to S 10+. We do not track a Swing on Amazon US, so it is not in the table.
What does the Galvan warranty cover?
Galvan's warranty page says all reels carry a lifetime warranty covering parts and workmanship under normal use. It applies to the original owner of a reel bought from an authorized Galvan dealer, with warranty registration or proof of purchase. Galvan decides whether to repair or replace. Repairs outside the warranty are charged. Read the page for the current terms.
